President Trump has alleged that director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were slain due to their past criticism of him. The Hollywood legend and his wife were discovered lifeless with their throats slashed in their sprawling estate in Los Angeles, several outlets have reported. In the hours since, the president took to X on Monday, December 15, to claim it could be linked to what Reiner said about him in the past. Rob Reiner was reportedly a staunch Democrat and political commentator. He frequently criticised the incumbent president, both during his first and second terms. Back in 2017, during an interview with Variety at the Dubai International Film Festival, he dubbed Trump “mentally unfit” to be president. He described him as “the single most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States,” noting that Trump showed “no interest in trying to find out how government works." In another interview with MS Now, he doubled down on his criticism when he said: “Our Democracy is being taken away from us and we only have about a year”, further adding, "We're sliding downhill in a very, very fast way, and we have to find a way to stop it." Tributes come pouring in for Rob Reiner and wife Michele: Read more In his statement on his Truth Social platform, President Trump said of Rob Reiner and Michele's killings: “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!” As of this writing, there is no confirmation that the murders were politically charged. However, several reports have suggested that the pair's son, Nick Rainer, is a suspect. Investigations are reportedly ongoing, though TV Insider has reported that, like his father, Nick was left-leaning. He previously worked for the ACLU of Southern California. Several prolific Democrats have since flocked to X to mourn the loss of the Hollywood director, including former President Barack Obama. He said that he and former first lady Michelle Obama were "heartbroken" to learn of the news, adding, "Beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people — and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired." Kamala Harris also took to X to mourn Rob Reiner and Michele's demise: "Rob and his wife Michele loved each other very much. They were dear friends, and Doug and I are devastated to learn of their passing," she penned. "Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this tragic time." California Gov. Gavin Newsom referred to the late director as a "big-hearted genius." "It’s hard to think of anyone more remarkable and excellent in every field and endeavor they pursued," speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said. "Rob was creative, funny, and beloved. And in all of their endeavors, Michelle was his indispensable partner, intellectual resource, and a loving wife." Stay tuned to SoapCentral for more.
