I Love LA is the latest hit streaming on HBO Max. Showrunners Rachel Sennott and Emma Barrie had a special cameo awaiting its audience in the show’s second episode, and recently shared the backstory.

When speaking with Deadline, Rachel Sennott opened up about close friend Ayo Edebiri’s turn in her newest project,

“I always want my friends in stuff so that I can hang out with them.”

Sennott went on to add,

“I’m like, ‘If you come shoot for two days, then we can have dinner,’ because she’s so busy all the time. I just love her. She’s so talented, so funny, so skilled as an actress, too.”

Emma Barrie added the following insight regarding Ayo’s unique choice to play her delusional pop star character as British.

“It’s unlike anything she’s done in a while. So absurd. And she was like, ‘I love it. Can I be British?' We were like, ‘If you want to be British, you can be British.'”

When speaking with Bustle, Rachel Sennott would go on to mention that she pitched the idea of a character to Ayo Edebiri over a video call.

“It was the day after the Met Gala. She Zooms me from her hotel room, it’s completely dark, and she’s like [tired voice], ‘What’s the idea? Let’s do it.’”

Sennott would go on to mention Ayo’s role in rounding out the character’s quirks and comedic sensibilities,

“She’s so funny, she improvs so much. She was like, ‘Can I have a mullet and a bedazzled vape and a British accent?’ And I was like, ‘Go off. Go off, girl.’ I love her so much as a friend and also to collaborate with ‘cause she brings so much to the table.”

Developing Edebiri’s role was clearly a collaborative effort, and Rachel Sennott seems genuinely pleased with the results.

Interestingly, Ayo Edebiri is not the only star featured on I Love LA's first season that has Sennott gushing. Leighton Meester, former Gossip Girl standout, also appears on the show as Rachel Sennott's character's boss.

Sennott was sure to heap praise on Meester, an idol turned co-star, via a Bustle interview,

Oh my god, I’m obsessed with Leighton, have been since Gossip Girl. I think she’s just so funny and talented, so funny in this show”

I Love LA premiered on November 2 and releases new episodes every Sunday.
