Ryan Murphy revealed he was taken aback when Jack Schlossberg, the nephew of John F. Kennedy Jr., publicly criticized the upcoming American Love Story series. Murphy is the writer of the show.
In a conversation with Governor Gavin Newsom on the podcast, This Is Gavin Newsom, Murphy said he was surprised by Schlossberg’s criticism.
While processing Schlossberg’s words, Murphy shared his emotion:
“I thought it was an odd choice to be mad about your relative that you really don't remember.”
The Glee mastermind explained that the comments stung, especially considering the personal nature of the subject matter.
In earlier statements, Jack Schlossberg had expressed concerns about American Love Story exploiting his family’s tragedy.
The synopsis of American Love Story, per IMDb, describes the series as one that:
"Explores the story of the courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, including their tragic deaths."
According to Entertainment Weekly, Schlossberg has expressed concerns about the series, saying it might be:
“Profiting off of it [the tragedy] in a grotesque way.”
To the concerns that the family wasn’t consulted, Ryan Murphy pointed out that the Kennedys had never been involved in the creation of other films or series about their family, of which there had been more than 88.
“I never even thought they wanted to do that,” Murphy shared.
Defending the series, he said that it was based on a book that treated the couple with compassion. The series casts Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. while Sarah Pidgeon plays Carolyn Bessette, and according to Murphy:
“Paul [Anthony Kelly] and Sarah [Pidgeon] playing their hearts out.”
Ryan Murphy accused of profiting from JFK Jr.’s legacy in Jack Schlossberg’s blunt response

Jack Schlossberg posted a pointed response to Ryan Murphy on Instagram. The nephew of John F. Kennedy Jr. shared a screenshot of Murphy’s comments, adding these words at the top of the image:
“Ryan Murphy: Say it to my face.”
Schlossberg’s accompanying message reflected on his cherished memories of his uncle, recalling moments such as being the ring bearer at JFK Jr.’s wedding and the pain of losing him. He wrote,
“I remember Wyclef singing at his funeral. More memories are passed down from stories — like the time he locked himself out of a car in an intersection and asked the guy screaming at him if he could borrow a golf club to smash the window to get the keys, and then did it.”
Schlossberg also accused Ryan Murphy of exploiting his family’s tragedy for profit, stating,
“You’re making millions off John, making a public spectacle of it but won’t contribute any of your riches to the causes he championed, or the legacy of public service he represented.”
He ended the post with a scathing comment about the actor portraying JFK Jr., calling him “bloated.”
As reported by The Wrap, the conflict took root in June after Jack Schlossberg posted a message on Instagram expressing his disapproval. His post read:
“Lately, my news feed has been filled with pictures of my uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., a great man, for those wondering whether his family was ever consulted, or has anything to do with the new show being made about him, the answer is no, and there’s really not much we can do.”
Schlossberg's mother Caroline Kennedy is the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy.
