Kelly Ripa is opening up about why she sometimes doesn't like working with her husband, Mark Consuelos.
One-half of the hosts of Live with Kelly and Mark reportedly got candid about working with her husband for over 30 years, and what she's not a fan of, during the July 15 episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.
“He doesn’t listen to me frequently, and he will tune me out while we are live on the air,” the 54-year-old said. “And I’m like here’s the thing, I’m used to you tuning me out in life, but when you are being paid—highly paid by the way—to literally listen to me, then you have to listen to me.” She added, “Literally I watch him. I watch him drift away. And I’m like, ‘Hey don’t do that.’”
The pair met on the set of All My Children, Entertainment Weekly has reported, and got hitched in 2996. Mark Consuelos was a frequent guest host on Live alongside Kelly Ripa before he bagged a permanent role. The pair shares kids Michael, 28, Lola, 24, and Joaquin, 22.
Kelly Ripa opens up about parenting, intimacy with her husband, and how he contributed to a larger audience:
As reported by Deadline, during her podcast segment, Kelly Ripa opened up about how Consuelos was initially apprehensive about joining her on Live after Ryan Seacrest quit, though the audience has taken to him well.
“The audience really responds to Mark because Mark has a zero Fs attitude,” she said. “And the audience loves that. There’s no artifice with him.” She also revealed that there are now men tuning in: “We have men sitting in our audience, a first. We have never had that before.”
The All My Children star also got candid about how she and her husband have kept things steamy over the years, and the one thing she's not a fan of, which is intimacy in the morning, InStyle has reported.
“I find it disgusting,” she told host Amanda Hirsch. “He’s a guy. He’s never going to learn.” Kelly Ripa went on, “He wants to kiss. I have a retainer in. I’ve got to rip that out. And he’s got his nasal strips on. It’s like we are the most repulsive, disgusting [people]. I’m already pre-disgusted for tomorrow morning.”
Kelly Ripa then recounted the conversation she had with him about switching things up for her:
“I said to him, ‘Here’s the thing. There needs to be a yin and a yang here. It can’t always be your way,’” she said. “‘It feels like 90 percent of the time it’s your way, and now that we work together every day, it’s gonna have to sometimes be my way. And my way’s at night only.’”
Elsewhere in the segment, Kelly Ripa opened up about how moms have no choice but to think far into the future, thereby impeding their ability to live in the moment:
"You're not going to be because right now you have little kids, so your whole life is zoomed out five years in advance," Ripa told Hirsch. "You are planning, you are looking at nursery schools, you're applying to programs, you're looking at summer camps. You're doing all the things that you have to do as a modern day, working parent."
She added,
"And I will tell you, and I want you to take this and live in it and have this knowledge that I didn't know. The work you are putting in now, even though you feel like you're not living in the moment, the work you are putting in now pays in dividends when they grow up."
Kelly Ripa also revealed that her three children have these "incredible memories" that she can "barely recall," simply because she was so busy and could not pay attention.
"They are fully aware of it. They are super aware," she shared. "And having said that, they will give glory and honor to all the times they spent with their babysitter. Like, favorite moments will be babysitter adjacent, but I just want you to also prepare yourself for that."
Recounting a time she asked her kids about their favorite moment as a child, they said:
"'Oh, that time that Jess took us to Victorian Gardens.' And I was like, 'But I took you there 500 times.' They were like, 'But when Jess took us'...it's like their favorite memories will all go back to their best babysitter moment."
