Stephen King shares his top ten favorite films
On September 9, 2025, Stephen King took to X to share his ten favorite films. He excluded the films that were adapted from his books. These include Misery, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile. While listing down the films, King noted that they are in no particular order. King mentioned names like The Godfather 2, Jaws, and Mean Streets, among others.
"My 10 favorite movies (excluding Misery, Shawshank, Green Mile, Stand By Me). In no particular order: Sorcerer, Godfather 2, The Getaway, Groundhog Day, Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Jaws, Mean Streets, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, Double Indemnity."
Sorcerer is a 1977 film directed by William Friedkin, adapted from the French novel Le Salaire de la peur, which was previously adapted as The Wages of Fear. Godfather 2 was a sequel to Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
In 2023, Stephen King had mentioned a list of his all-time favorite 25 films. This included Les Diaboliques, Duel, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Blair Witch Project, Crimson Peak, and Late Night with the Devil.
King's novel The Long Walk has recently been adapted into a namesake feature film. It was released on September 12, 2025. The film's director, Francis Lawrence, spoke to the BBC about it,
"I read The Long Walk right around the time I was doing I Am Legend [2007] and I fell in love with it. It became probably my favourite King book, and one of my favourite books [period]."
King originally published the novel under the pen name Richard Bachman, which he used for a brief period in the 1970s.
