Actress Uma Thurman, known for her roles in Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill franchise, shared candid details about her eating habits while acting. The actress was a guest on a recent episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
As Fallon and Thurman discussed her works, she said in The Old Guard 2, which came out this year, she had a chance to try her hand at action again. Fallon mentioned how the actress needed to train herself for the fight scenes, to which Thurman said she barely got any training.
The show host remembered a conversation with her backstage where she said she was worried about eating more than the action scenes. He recalled she said she didn’t like to eat on camera. Uma Thurman pitched in:
“By the way, do you know eating in front of strangers is one of the questions on the DSM. Do you know what the DSM is? It’s like one of these check things that psychiatrists do to find out what your neuroses are.”
She went on:
“But one of the questions on it is, ‘Do you feel anxiety when you eat in front of people?’ I was like, ‘Yeah!’ I mean, who doesn’t?”
Uma Thurman explained that eating while acting wasn’t easy because scenes often needed to be filmed multiple times, and actors didn’t get to choose what food they had to eat. From what it seems, the actress becomes anxious while eating in front of people while shooting scenes.
Jimmy Fallon pointed out that they also had to speak with food in their mouths. Uma added that it became tricky when lines had to be delivered mid-bite, which made her worry about the risk of choking.
Uma Thurman looks back on her costumes from Kill Bill and Batman & Robin
Jimmy Fallon pointed out that Brad Pitt often ate something in his scenes, no matter what it was. Uma Thurman responded by saying that many actors included eating in their performances, but it was something she hadn’t quite mastered yet.
She joked that doing a good eating scene was still on her list of things she wanted to try, like one of those personal goals she hadn’t checked off.
In 2024, the actress sat down with Kelly Clarkson on the latter’s show, where they discussed moments from Kill Bill. When asked if she got to keep her jacket, Uma Thurman replied:
“I have my costumes, yeah, I do. Yeah, I have my sword and I have my costumes. It was a Bruce Lee onesie. And he looked pretty awesome in it."
Uma Thurman shared that during pregnancy, she had a hard time stopping herself from eating because she enjoyed food. She recalled her mother once reminding her that only a small part of the weight gain was the baby, and the rest would stick around.
When asked about her costume in Batman & Robin, she said it was tough to wear since it was made entirely of rubber and had to be pulled on like an extremely tight and uncomfortable pair of compression tights. Despite the discomfort, she found it to be a fun and creative experience.
