What did Will Smith say about his IQ? Actor discusses new song title 'Work of Art'

Actor and rapper Will Smith recently sat down for an interview with Hungarian news portal Telex. In the piece, published on July 14, the interviewer quotes a line from his 2021 book Will, which mentions that the actor has an IQ of 142 and is a ‘work of art.’

The interviewer mentions that this line is also his first rap verse. When asked if his IQ was high, the actor said:

“No, no. Clearly by saying that in my rap, it sort of clarified that my IQ wasn't that high. But I'm working on it.”

Work of Art is also the name of his 2025 song from his fifth studio album, Based on a True Story. When asked about the significance of the phrase, Smith said:

“You know, I think the concept is something that has developed more in my mind. It's more clear to me now. The concept of being a living work of art and how each of us as individuals is a unique work of art. A physical, biological, psychological, spiritual, one of a kind.”

Will Smith went on:

“So it’s the idea that we are individuals, the first time we've ever happened, like you've never happened in the universe before. So part of that recognition, with the good or the bad and the things you like about yourself or don't like about yourself and all of those parts are all beautiful brush strokes in the personal work of art that you are.”

Will Smith shared that he learned it was okay not to be perfect. He believed everyone had their specialities. He wanted to make a song that talked about how people can have many sides to them, even if some sides seem different or confusing. To him, being human, with all those mixed-up parts, was something beautiful.

Will Smith said he didn’t pay much attention to reviews of his work anymore. He explained that unless someone had made a movie or a song, their opinion didn’t mean as much to him. However, if someone with experience, like a famous director, gave feedback, he would want to hear it.

For him, the goal of art was to share ideas with people who understood and appreciated it. When asked why he released a new album after 20 years, Will Smith said he had a lot more to share and felt like he had found a new side of himself.

He felt excited to express his thoughts and feelings in this new part of his life. Speaking of his aspirations, he said:

“Every movie I make isn't going to be The Pursuit of Happyness. But the constant creation of the art, it's all a part of the landscape of my legacy. So we'll see where it lands 10 years from now.”

Talking about his 2021 book, he said it described his journey and the way he thought during the time he became successful. He believed he would write another book someday. At the moment, the new album was his way of sharing the fresh ideas and changes he had gone through.
