Austin Butler has responded to Zoe Kravitz's accidental diss about his role on The Carrie Diaries.

During a recent "Lie Detector" interview for Vanity Fair, Butler asked his Caught Stealing co-star a question about its spinoffs. The latter, a self-proclaimed Sex and the City megafan, was asked which show she liked best: the prequel, the original, or its latest HBO Max sequel, And Just Like That.

"Neither," Kravitz quipped. "Leave that show alone. Everybody just stop."

Butler, who starred in both seasons of the prequel, jokingly chucked the stack of papers he was holding over him, as if to say the Q&A session had come to an end.

"Okay, all right, so then I'm gonna throw this guy out," he said as he began to laugh. "And this guy out."

That's when Kravitz realised her mistake:

"Oh no, are you on that show?" she asked, to which Butler answered, "Yeah, I was in The Carrie Diaries." Kravitz responded with an apology: "Okay, sorry," she said. "Didn't know that."

The man conducting the lie detector test then confirmed to Austin Butler that the actress was being honest about not knowing he worked on the show.

Austin Butler, 34, played Sebastian Kydd on The Carrie Diaries, which followed a young Carrie Bradshaw as she navigated high school in Connecticut. The show is set years before she shifted to New York to become a columnist. AnnaSophia Robb portrayed Carrie, while Kydd was her on-again-off-again boyfriend.

During a February 2023 segment of Variety's Award Circuit podcast, the actor reminisced about his days on the show:

“I have so many fond memories of that time because that was when I first moved to New York,” he said at the time. “I never lived in New York before and I was able to move to New York for two years and make that show. It was that and getting to be around AnnaSophia, everybody in that show, [they were] just so fun to be around, even just going back and watching Sex and the City.”

Austin Butler, who has since been nominated for an Academy Award, continued:

“I remember having an apartment in New York, I’d take a bath and I’d pop on Sex and the City. I was like a middle-aged woman [with] a glass of wine [and] always candles.”

Entertainment Weekly has reported that during the lie detector test, Butler asked Kravitz how she felt about And Just Like That coming to an end after three seasons.

"I feel mixed feelings about it," she admitted.

When asked about her favorite "batshit plotline" from the show, she said:

"'Favorite' is a word I don't think I can use for that show. There are some plotlines that confused me more than others. There were plotlines that made me more upset than others. Like the window! What was up with the window?"
