Zoltan Hargitay was born on 1 August 1960 to Hungarian bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay and actress Jayne Mansfield. He is the second of the three previously known children born to the couple. In the documentary, "My Mom Jayne," directed by his sister, actress Mariska Hargitay, a previously unknown family secret was revealed. In the documentary, it was revealed that Mariska is the biological daughter of entertainer Nelson Sardelli, who was in a relationship with the "Promise, Promise!" actress before her death.
According to People Magazine, Zoltan Hargitay maintains a close bond with his siblings. In 2021, the "Law & Order" actress posted a sweet birthday message for her older brother. She wrote:
"Happy Birthday to my kind, loving and open and huge hearted brother … Who is like Ted Lasso, is a relentless optimist, Happy Birthday Lion Man, I love you,”
According to Zoltan Hargitay's IMDB profile, he has worked on the sets of movies like Reflections on Crime, T-Force, Shrunken Heads, and more.
In November 1966, while visiting Jungleland, an animal-themed park along with his siblings and parents, the young Zolton was attacked by a lion and had to undergo a six-hour-long surgery. The park had a unique arrangement that allowed people to take pictures with the trained animals at the park, which caused the tragedy to take place. The amusement park later closed down due to legal disputes.
In 1967, three-year-old Mariska, eight-year-old Mickey, and seven-year-old Zoltan Hargitay were in the back seat of the car that was also carrying their mother, Jayne Mansfield, and her lawyer and the driver, all of whom were sitting in the front. The car collided with a trailer truck, causing the deaths of everyone in the front seat. The three children escaped unscathed and were later raised by Mickey Hargitay and his third wife, Ellen Siano.
Zoltan Hargitay generally leads a life away from the spotlight. But in 2013, he, along with his brother Mickey Hargitay, half sister Jayne Marie, and their mother, Ellen Siano, attended the unveiling of the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when Mariska Hargitay was given the special honor.
Mariska Hargitay's other sibling, Jayne Marie Mansfield, was born in 1950 to Jayne Mansfield and her first husband, Paul Mansfield. Her parents had a troubled marriage, as Paul attempted to discourage the Golden Globe-winning actress from pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. According to People Magazine, like her mother, she also appeared on the cover of Playboy Magazine, becoming the first mother-daughter duo to do so. Jayne Marie, who has appeared in some movies, later opted for a life away from the spotlight and now allegedly works as a money manager. She was previously married to Barry Lang and shares one child with him.
Jayne Marie Mansfield was raised along with her half-siblings, Mickey, Mariska, and Zoltan Hargitay. Mickey Hargitay Jr. has now opened his own garden nursery, "Mickey Hargitay Plants," which sells succulents, cacti, and other assorted plants, according to the company website.
In a 2016 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Mickey Hargitay expressed why he chose not to pursue a career in Hollywood. He said:
"[My family] made decisions to reach for the stars and I’ve wanted to keep my feet on the ground. I’ve wanted to do something that seems more grounded and is more real."
Just as Mariska Hargitay has shown love for her brother Zoltan Hargitay, she also expressed deep appreciation for Mickey Hargitay and how he nurtures his plants. She wrote:
“I love this guy so much. Best big brother. Soulful. Protective. Nurturing. Funny. Fun. Kind. Wise. Gentle. Hard Working. Fair. To watch somebody nurture plants is a thing of beauty.”
Mariska has another brother from her mother's third marriage to Italian film director Matt Cimber. Though the marriage was short-lived, their son, Tony Cimber, was born in October 1965. According to his IMDB Profile, Tony Cimber now works as a director in Hollywood.
