The Academy Award-winning actress and director, Angelina Jolie, who recently starred in Alice Winocour's drama film Couture, in a Q&A session at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), went emotional and choked up as she remembered her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand.

Jolie, who lost her mother due to cancer, shared a message when an audience member asked her what she would like to tell people who are struggling with cancer. The question that made the 50-year-old Angelina Jolie emotional was asked by an audience member whose friend recently died of cancer.

The Maleficent star took a moment to compose herself before answering the question. She said:

"I'm very sorry for your loss."

Jolie continued:

"I think I will say that one thing I remember my mother saying when she had cancer, she said to me once, we had had a dinner and people were asking her how she was feeling and she said, 'All anybody ever asks me about is cancer.'"

Angelina Jolie, who was attending TIFF for the premiere of Couture, along with her co-stars, Anyier Anei and Ella Rumpf, and writer-director Alice Winocour, further added:

"So I would say, if you know someone who is going through something, ask them about everything else in their life as well, you know? They’re a whole person and they’re still living."

Angelina Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in January 2007 at the age of 56, was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999. Later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

In 2013, Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy, as genetic tests indicated that she had a high chance of developing breast cancer. However, in My Medical Choice, a New York Times op-ed piece, the Original Sin actress revealed that the surgery helped decrease her chance of developing breast cancer to under five percent.

Angelina Jolie, who is the lead in Alice Winocour's brand-new film Couture, plays the character of Maxine, an American filmmaker who lands a job to shoot a video for a fashion event in Paris, in the middle of a divorce, and learns that she has breast cancer.

While the movie deals with cancer, it also focuses on "life and the pulsation of life." Winocour said:

"We really didn't want to depress you about cancer, quite the opposite."

While she added that the movie is also about "the spirit of survival," Winocour said:

Jolie "immediately found a personal connection with the film for reasons we know since her mother and grandmother died of breast cancer."

Winocour further added:

"She also had a connection in her flesh to this story since she underwent a double mastectomy to escape her family fate."
