Caitlyn Jenner opened up recently about the devastating loss of her longtime friend and manager, Sophia Hutchins. The 75-year-old Olympian and media personality spoke about the incident after it occurred seven weeks ago, expressing how her sorrow has grown since the August 27 school shooting in Minneapolis.
Speaking about the school shooting in Minneapolis, she said:
“So when this happened, it really hit me hard,”
In an emotional interview on Fox News at Night, Jenner recalled Hutchins' untimely death from an ATV accident in Malibu on July 2. Jenner said:
“Recently my good friend Sophia passed away in a tragic accident. But for the last seven weeks, I've been dealing with death, and it's so difficult.”
The former Olympian and media personality then focused on the Annunciation Catholic School incident in Minneapolis, when two young boys, Harper Moyski, 10, and Fletcher Merkel, 8, were killed by gunshots and left others injured.
“So when this happened, it really hit me hard. Because here I am dealing with my grief, and I just can't even imagine parents who dropped their kid off at school and, like that father just said, ‘I'll never get a chance to talk to him again.’ That is I just so horrible.”
She added:
“And I've been dealing with grief, and these people have a long road ahead of them, and they're going to be dealing with grief.”
Details of Caitlyn Jenner's longtime friend, Sophie Hutchins' accident
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department claims that Hutchins rear-ended a 2016 Mazda vehicle while operating a 2013 Polaris four-wheeler in the Malibu mountains. Her car veered off the road and fell around 350 feet over a cliff as a result of the accident.
According to Sergeant Eduardo Saucedo, who spoke to the Daily Mail, Hutchins seemed to have been moving too fast right before crashing:
“It doesn't seem like she was following them. I think she just came up on them and then hit the car."
The Sergeant added:
It looked like she tried to maneuver to go around it, but she was going too fast and just ended up clipping the rear end of that Mazda, causing her to veer off and go off the cliff there.”
The passengers of the Mazda that she clipped were unhurt. Hutchins died from severe blunt force injuries, which the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ultimately concluded were unintentional.
Caitlyn Jenner was present along with the family for her burial on July 24 at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Los Angeles.
Decade-long friendship
Since a makeup artist first introduced them, Hutchins and Caitlyn Jenner have been friends for almost ten years. A chance encounter developed into a strong friendship. Speaking about their friendship and bond, Sophia Hutchins told The New York Times in 2019:
"Having a similar sense of humor, we spent the entire time laughing and ended up meeting for brunch. We've been great friends ever since."
Soon, the friendship developed into a business partnership. Speaking to The New York Times in 2019 about Sophia's talent and entrepreneurship, Caitlyn Jenner said:
"She is one of the top minds in her field. Her value in my life is undeniable. The sky is the limit with her entrepreneurial spirit."
Sophia was not only close to Caitlyn Jenner but also to the whole Kardashian-Jenner family and would often be seen at family gatherings over the holidays, red carpet events, charity galas, and high-profile industry gatherings.
The duo has been spotted together as agent and manager at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and The Hollywood Reporter’s Empowerment in Entertainment event.
