In 2019, after 25 years of marriage, Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, and MacKenzie Scott, an author and philanthropist, got a divorce.

Their partnership, which began in the early 1990s and produced four children—three boys and an adopted daughter—came to an end, ending one of the richest divorce settlements in history.

Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, a former TV host and licensed pilot, began dating soon after his divorce. The relationship was initially made public on January 24, 2019. In May 2023, Bezos proposed to Sánchez with a 30-carat ring aboard his yacht Koru.

Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Tuttle met in 1992 while Bezos was the vice president of the hedge fund D. E. Shaw. They were married in January 1993 after three months of dating. They quickly went from Manhattan to Seattle, where they started Amazon in a leased garage. Bezos turned Amazon into a giant online business that ships products all over the world in the next 10 years. Scott, on the other hand, focused on her writing and raising kids.

After 25 years of marriage, Jeff Bezos and Scott welcomed a girl from China into their family, adding to their brood of three biological sons. Their eldest child, Preston Bezos, was born in 2000 and received his MIT degree in 2022.

Their three youngest children are mostly out of public attention due to their strong desire for privacy. They resorted to traditional methods of parenting, avoiding full-time nannies, and even tried homeschooling them for a while to instill in them a sense of independence and resourcefulness.

Bezos and Scott announced their divorce on January 9, 2019, after being married for 25 years. A judge in King County, Washington, made the separation official on July 6, 2019.

Scott got around 4% of Amazon's shares, which were valued at about $38.3 billion at the time. Jeff Bezos retained the other 75%. After the divorce, MacKenzie Scott became one of the wealthiest people in the world, and her four kids got the biggest fortune ever split.

With his marriage to Lauren Sánchez, who has three kids, Bezos becomes a father figure to seven kids in total. Two of her children are from her marriage to talent agent Patrick Whitesell, while the third is from her relationship with Tony Gonzalez, a former NFL wide receiver.

Jeff Bezos' four kids from his previous marriage to Scott and his three stepkids from his new marriage with Sánchez will make them earn shares in Amazon and other assets, even though he is still the company's biggest shareholder. Even though Bezos hasn't been open about his estate divisions, Scott got 19.7 million Amazon shares as part of the 2019 settlement.

In his interviews, Jeff Bezos has made it clear that he wants his successors to be educated and able to take care of themselves so that they may follow their interests instead of living off the inherited funds solely.
