About Joe Locke coming out

It was in the year 2023 that actor Joe Locke came out in public about his sexuality as he confirmed in an interview with Teen Vogue Magazine that he was gay. The actor who was 19 at the time, spoke about being open about his sexuality from the age of 12. While fans always speculated that Joe Locke was queer, this interview was helpful in clearing up the air.

“I have been openly gay since I was, like, 12,” Locke told the publication “People have assumed and written it, [but] I haven’t ever corrected anyone because I haven’t felt the need to – I’ve never specifically stated my sexuality [until now].”

In the Netflix series Heartstopper, Joe Locke plays the character of Charlie Spring, who develops a crush on a fellow schoolboy. The show won praise for accurately depicting the life and emotions of queer high-schoolers and the chemistry shared between lead protagonists of the series.

“It’s a weird guilt I sometimes feel that, by association, their [Locke's family’s] lives are affected by choices in my life. It’s a mutual thing. I need to learn my boundaries and people need to learn theirs. Most attention comes from a really good place, and I hope I always appreciate that.”

Locke said in an interview with Teen Vogue.

When Locke's co-star wrote a post telling people that he was bi-sexual and people started hate commenting on the post, Locke told Teen Vogue that it was brave for him to do so and that he handled the situation very well.

“We were all very proud of him, and we’re proud of him controlling the narrative,”

Locke told Teen Vogue.

“I’m very proud of him for doing his own thing and what was right for him.”
“There’s an idea that it’s part of the job to lose your privacy, that you lose your right to having privacy. That’s something I hope the next generation of people in the public eye can change – I think people are understanding that privacy is non-negotiable.”
