CREDO23 was created by the actress, writer, and director Justine Bateman, who has been vocal about her opposition to the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking as a means to protect human creativity in the entertainment industry.

Launched in 2023, the initiative acts like a certification system for ensuring that films and TV productions are being made without the use of generative AI. Now Bateman has extended her vision, organizing the inaugural CREDO23 Film Festival, a no-AI event that is set to launch in Los Angeles.

CREDO23 was introduced in 2023 by Justine Bateman and is set against a backdrop of heated debate over AI’s usage in Hollywood. The initiative came during the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes, in which AI was a major point of concern. Talking to Deadline, Bateman said:

"With studios, streamers, and now film festivals, embracing generative AI, it was time for the CREDO 23 Film Festival, The festival honors the incredible human artists who make films,"

Continuing the momentum behind the success of the certification stamp, Bateman declared the CREDO23 Film Festival, a no-AI event that will take place between March 28 and 30 at the American Legion in Hollywood.

Festival submissions were accepted from August 1, 2024, to October 31, 2024. The CREDO23 Film Festival has decided to screen only films made by humans, resonating with its ideals.
