More about Regina King and Malcolm-Jamal Warner's relationship

Regina King and Malcolm-Jamal Warner had known each other since they were child actors in the 1980s. She was previously married to Ian Alexander Sr., from 1997 until their divorce in 2007. The former couple shared a child, Ian Alexander Jr, who passed away in 2022, which was reportedly an apparent suicide.

In 2011 Regina King and Malcolm-Jamal Warner were linked together romantically for the first time, and it was reported that the couple had also started living together.

In an 2011 interview with BET, the "Reed Between the Lines" actor talked about his relationship with Regina King, discussing how despite being in such a high prolife relationship, both of them chose to keep their private lives away from the spotlight. He had said:

"I think Regina and I are both of the philosophy that we keep our private lives private. All relationships go through all kinds of peaks and valleys. And I think it’s unfortunate — when you live in the public eye, of course, your peaks and valleys are going to be heavily scrutinized. So we just kind of prefer to protect what we have going on because relationships are work, anyway."

He had further added:

"We don’t need the rest of the world in our Kool-Aid. So we like to protect what we have because it’s very special and very precious. We’d like to keep it out of everybody’s hands and visions. But I will say that it’s a relationship that makes all the sense in the world."

In an 2012 interview with Parade, Regina King also made rare comment about her then blossoming relationship with Malcolm Jamal Warner, and said:

“I believe the universe has a plan, and we probably wouldn’t have been ready years ago. We both had to do whatever we had to do to be ready for each other now.”

According to US Weekly, in 2013, after two years of dating, the couple ended their relationship after Malcolm-Jamal Warner allegedly asked Regina King and her son to move out. Although the couple chose to keep the details of their breakup private, a source close to the couple revealed to the outlet that it was Malcolm-Jamal Warner who had allegedly initiated the break up. They said:

"He said he wasn't feeling it anymore."

Later, it was indicated that the couple may have ended their relationship on a bad note, prompting the "227" actress to take to her social media and clarify that the pair were still on good terms. She wrote:

"Hey everybody PLEASE don't believe everything you read. Me & @MalcolmJamalWar are good. Life happens. Forward motion. Godspeed."

In 2022, nine years after her break up with Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Regina King tragically lost her son, Ian Alexander Jr., to a suicide. According to The Guardian, "Seven Seconds" actress opened about her son's sudden passing during her 2024 appearance on Good Morning America, saying:

"Grief is a journey. I understand that grief is love, that it has no place to go. I know that it’s important for me to honor Ian in the totality of who he is.”

After his break up from Regina King, Malcolm-Jamal Warner married and welcomed a child, but he chose to keep the details about his relationship private.
