The Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) star Monyetta Shaw-Carter is getting candid about her breast cancer diagnosis.

In an exclusive interview with People, the reality star and former radio personality revealed that she was diagnosed with the ailment last year.

"I had a biopsy about 10 years ago and it came back benign," the 45-year-old said. "Then last year in September I was doing a self-check because I felt this random sensation that I can’t really describe in my left b**b. It was like nothing I’ve ever felt before. It was literally like my body was alerting me that something was wrong."

The following month, in November, during a routine mammogram, doctors discovered a lump, which allowed them to diagnose her with "slow-growing" stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma. By January, she had gone through a lumpectomy and 16 rounds of chemo. However, this May, she was declared cancer-free.

Monyetta Shaw-Carter says singer Ne-Yo was by her side the whole time

Monyetta Shaw-Carter is known for her role in the reality TV series, RHOA, where she appears alongside Shereé Whitfield, Kenya Moore, and Shamea Morton Mwangi. As reported by The Mirror, while she was diagnosed just last year, she has had her doubts about the ailment for an entire decade. She said,

"Because I caught the cancer early, I will be here for my kids. There’s nothing more important than getting checked often and early to protect your future." She added: "Our health is irreplaceable. I can’t thank my exceptional doctors and nurses enough. They are our heroes.”

She continued,

“While doing all of the biopsies and MRIs I was first considering having a double mastectomy. But after my genetic testing came back favorable, and after sitting in my reality for some time, I decided on the lumpectomy.”

As pointed out by The Daily Mail, Monyetta Shaw-Carter's husband, Heath Carter, stood by her side the entire time, and so did her ex-fiancé, singer Ne-Yo, with whom she shares two children: daughter Madilyn 'Maddie,' 14, and son, Mason, 13.

'We actually told him when we were all there, my husband, and Ne-Yo, Maddie and Mason, and some of Maddie's friends, were at a bowling alley, celebrating Maddie's birthday,' she said. 'The kids were talking and playing and bowling. And we took him to the side and told Ne-Yo the news, and the shock that was on his face said it all,' she added. 'He was just super supportive. Ne-Yo was just showing up for me in a major way and just always asking and making sure everything was okay. He was like, "Oh, you're gonna beat this."'

Monyetta Shaw-Carter, also appeared as a friend-of on RHOA seasons 14 and 15, as well as a guest on the following season, and she also serves as the CEO of Keep It Classy Nails.

She celebrated her 45th birthday on May 31, with the party doubling for breast cancer awareness. She told People that all her guests had to wear pink, which has long been associated with the disease, as a celebration of her beating cancer.

Back in June 2023, Monyetta Shaw-Carter sat down for an episode of The Sip & Sit Podcast, where she reflected on what it was like for her to appear on the reality TV series.

Noting that it was "good" for her because of the genuine bond she shared with several of the cast members, she said,

“Nothing can prepare you for the ‘Housewives of Atlanta,’ honey.” The television personality revealed that she had been on a reality show before but stated, “It’s different. It’s definitely different, but I’m loving it. It’s fun. I’m learning as I go.” She went on, “One thing’s for sure, I’m being my authentic self … you either hate it or love it, but I gotta be me."

She also recounted being more timid in Season 14, but by the next year, she was more out there:

“I just made sure I jumped in there and you know, just voiced my opinions a few times, because if you say it one time, that part might not make it,” Monyetta Shaw-Carter said.
