Actress Olivia Munn’s mother had a late introduction to John Mulaney. The Your Friends & Neighbors actress was a guest on a recent episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers.
As they conversed, Seth Meyers showed a photo of Malcolm on his first Thanksgiving. The photo showed her son grabbing a turkey leg. Olivia Munn said:
“Malcolm was born the day before Thanksgiving and my Mom comes. First of all, never met John by this point. And so she arrives with a suitcase from Oklahoma. She came and she doesn’t say Hi to John. She just unzips her suitcase, takes out frozen turkeys. So, she’s like, ‘It’s from Oklahoma.’”
Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, Olivia and John’s first child, was born on November 24, 2021. As per People Magazine, they got hitched in July 2024. The actress went on:
“She thinks it’s so exciting that they are from Oklahoma. They are butterball. So, anyways, she says to John, ‘You know, it’s so exciting in my family, with all of our kids, it’s a tradition. We put a drumstick in their hand for their first Thanksgiving when they are baby.’ And John’s like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’”
Olivia Munn recalled that John Mulaney then told her about what her mother had said, and she objected, saying it was not a tradition. However, her mother kept insisting. She then called her siblings and asked if they had photos of such a tradition, and they replied negatively, suggesting it was a lie.
The actress said John Mulaney held Malcolm, and Munn’s mother patted the child’s head, announcing it as a new tradition.
The story behind Olivia Munn and John Mulaney’s daughter’s name
Olivia Munn's daughter’s name is Méi, which means “plum” in Chinese. She said they were pondering over the middle name. However, her mother said she was called June by many, which, according to her mother, was the American version of her real name. Munn said:
“So, later John saying, ‘You know, that would be such a pretty name and such a great way to honor your mother. So, why don’t we name her Méi June?’ I thought that’s a great idea.”
After Méi’s birth, her mother visited the hospital. When Olivia Munn asked her what she thought about the name, she reacted, “It’s okay.” Olivia shared that she was initially upset about something her mother said regarding her baby’s name.
She had considered naming her daughter Méi Estelle after her grandmother Estelle. Her mother supported changing the name and kept suggesting alternatives for weeks. Olivia Munn eventually got frustrated and asked her to stop.
Later, Olivia realized that her mom just wanted someone to talk to. She recalled how her mom once spoke for half an hour, talking about how she doesn’t talk much. So, Olivia asked her mom if she had made up a story just to have a reason to chat — specifically the claim that people used to call her June.
When asked when that happened, her mom replied that two women had called her June back in 1987. After hearing that, Olivia Munn decided to stick with the name June for her daughter, partly in tribute to her mom. She joked that she hoped her daughter wouldn’t become such a storyteller.
