Months after Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, were convicted of all counts in their federal wire fraud trial, the latter seeks a lighter sentence.

Hot New Hip Hop has reported that the pair were found guilty in March 2025 in their $1 million federal trial, and Kingston's sentencing hearing has been scheduled for August 15, while Turner's is set for July 31.

Per Billboard, Janice Turner, 61, petitioned Judge David S. Leibowitz to grant her a lighter sentence of 30 months, which is less than half of what the guidelines state. According to Hot New Hip Hop, this could be between 63 to 78 months, seeing as she was convicted on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four more charges of wire fraud.

Sean Kingston and Janice Turner's legal struggles explored:

Hot 97 reported that ahead of the hearing, Turner's lawyers filed a motion for a weaker sentence, citing her “myriad of health issues," “minimal criminal history," and that she did not profit from the crimes personally.

“Ms. Turner will go to prison; she has earned the prison sentence,” her attorneys explained. “However, a sentence greater than thirty months is a waste of taxpayer resources based upon the history and characteristics of Ms. Turner.” “A sentence of thirty months or less will serve the purposes of sentencing,” the filing states.

Janice Turner was taken into custody soon after the verdict was announced, with the judge referring to her as a key figure in the ruling. The judge reportedly described her as the "operator, fixer, and accountant" behind the crimes.

According to NBC Miami, arrest warrants accused Kingson and Janice Turner of cheating several businesses, some of which include a jeweler, a luxury furniture producer, and a TV and entertainment company.

Prosecutors contended that they bought these items by using fabricated documents like bank wires and payment transfers, and then kept them even though they didn't pay for them. The team argued that the value of all the stolen items amounted to north of $1 million, and that Turner was the “nerve center” of the operation.

Janice Turner's legal team also touted the letters from her supporters, who referred to her as a “pillar in her community” and a “motherly figure whose home was a refuge.”

“Ms. Turner fed the hungry, clothed the less fortunate, and encouraged those who had lost their hope,” they claimed. “Her generosity and love for others did not have a limit, and she exemplifies a life lived of service to the public.”

Furthermore, Janice Turner is beseeching the judge to sentence her to a prison in Miami, which would make it easier for her family to visit her more frequently.

"The love and support resulting from Ms. Turner’s family and friends being able to visit her while in custody will allow her a greater chance of positive matriculation through the prison system,” they added.

As for Sean Kingston, since the trial, he has been under house arrest and had to pay a bond to be let go from jail, though his mother has been in federal custody. His sentencing was scheduled for the same date as his mother, though it was postponed as he did not have a lawyer. He will now have to find a new one before his new court date of August 28.
