Tyson Bagent, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, has agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract deal that may increase to $16 million with incentives, guaranteeing his spot with the team until 2027.
In an emotional news conference following the announcement on August 20, 2025, the 25-year-old spoke about his humble beginnings and his father's sacrifices.
After joining the Bears as an undrafted free agent from Shepherd University, Tyson Bagent made his NFL debut in 2023. Despite a slow debut in his rookie year, he made an immediate impression on Chicago's coaching staff, eventually defeating seasoned quarterbacks to land the quarterback position.
Bagent played in five games that year, starting four of them. He led the Bears to a 2-2 record in his starts, completing 65.7% of his passes for 859 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Bagent is praised for showing determination and patience as he rose through the ranks. Before he was balling it all out in the NFL with the Bears, he was doing it in the NCAA Division II, where he played for Shepherd University. He had 1,400 pass completions and 17,034 throwing yards at the end of his collegiate career. He also took home the Harlan Hill Trophy following an outstanding 2021 campaign.
Despite achieving all that, it was not enough for Bagent to secure a starting position at the Bears. He fought through the ranks and was finally the Bears' backup quarterback.
Tyson Bagent's emotional contract extension
Tyson Bagent was ecstatic to hear the good news and broke down in tears as he recalled his father's struggles. Bagent fought back tears as he said:
"You know, a lot of people don't know this, but my dad is my right-hand man, and he didn't even have running water until he was in high school."
He continued:
"There's definitely a lot of things for people that I think I could certainly help. With this gift I've been blessed with, but yeah, just little things like that, you know, I don't really know anybody back at home with any money, so it feels good."
Bagent concluded:
"It's certainly a weight off my shoulders and my family's shoulders. It definitely means a lot."
Even Bears general manager Ryan Poles said in a statement:
"We are fortunate to ensure that Tyson remains a member of the Chicago Bears. He is one of the hardest workers on our team and in addition to being a great competitor and teammate, he is a catalyst for positive influence throughout our entire organization."
While the Bears' head coach Ben Johnson added:
"Tyson epitomizes what we are building at the Chicago Bears. We are constructing a team that is driven by belief and built by hard work, and there is no better example of that than Tyson Bagent."
It is not just the management and Tyson Bagent who are stoked about this extension; even fans are excited as well. NFL and Bears fan took their joy and excitement of Tyson Bagent's extension to X.
