Marvin Young rose to popularity with the track 'Bust a Move' released in the year 1989. This smashing hit earned the 22-year-old rapper a Grammy at a time when his classmates were busy studying and burning the midnight oil.
The hip-hop sensation released three upbeat songs titled 'Kinetic', 'Fun Part', and 'Loose'. The three tracks carry the nostalgia of 'Bust a Move' and bring flashes of the same beat and music style. The 'Fun Part' debuted on the 38th spot on the Billboard Airplay Rythmic chart. The track brought him back to the charts after the year 2002. The 57-year-old rapper is taking the help of Artificial Intelligence to produce sounds that bring back the charm of his tracks.
An AI-generated voice called Disco Teresa has started singing along with Young MC across his singles. She sometimes also introduces label tags and acts like a call-and-response partner to Young's tracks. In an interview with Newsweek, Young labels her as the mascot of Disco Theory.
"She's like the label mascot for Disco Theory."
He further spoke about the thought of using animated voices in producer tag or a label tag and thinking about how would it sound.
"My thought process was, if you took a producer tag or a label tag that people have in their production or in their music and you fully animated it and were able to have a conversation with it, where it was actually reacting to what's happening in the song, how would that sound?"
Disco Teresa was featured in the music video of 'Fun Part' as a mannequin with wires. The voice appears to be in a robotic tone.
The story of Young MC's iconic Grammy win
He was awarded the Best Rap Performance at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards which was also the first televised Grammy. This happened in the year 1990 for his hit track 'Bust a Move'. He earned the award at the age of 22 before even completing college.
The award-winning track was the last recorded song of his first album Stone Cold Rhymin. It was in September'87 that Young signed the deal for this album. In an interview with Azcentral, the musician said that he got the best grades in that very year.
"I had 18 credits, two more than normal. I had a job off campus as the ticket taker and usher at the sports arena and coliseum. I was a student senator. I was recording ‘Stone Cold Rhymin’. And ironically I got my best grades junior year. That taught me that I was able to compartmentalize and that multitasking was a good thing for me."
The Grammy-winning track was also featured in Glee, an extremely popular show on Fox Television. A cover of the song was performed by a teacher for his students, giving an example of it as a mash-up track, thus signifying the massive appeal of the track. It has now become quite common for all his fans to find his tracks and tunes in a number of movies and series.
With a career spanning over 30 years, MC's music has always bridged gaps between generations in a mindful way. His innovative use of AI in his latest songs, in the form of Disco Teresa portrays a sense of freshness that he adds to his music. This is what keeps listeners hooked to his songs.
