Josh Duhamel is sharing why he decided to make a home far from Hollywood.

In a recent interview with People magazine, the Ransom Canyon star opened up about swapping the glitz and glamour for the peaceful lakes of Minnesota.

"I make movies and TV shows, and I love it, I truly do love it, but I had this calling to go and really do things with my hands again,” Josh Duhamel said in the interview, which dropped on August 10. “Fix things, make things and just do the basic things that we take for granted. I'm really more of a guy who wants to stay true to my roots, get back to the basics, hone whatever basic skills I need in this world of massive technology,” he continued, “to do the basic things to provide for my family.”

As reported by E! News, the actor, 52, purchased land somewhere near Fargo, North Dakota, over a decade ago, and has been working on constructing a lakeside cabin that he refers to as his “doomsday cabin.”

Josh Duhamel gets candid about building an off-the-grid home for his kids:

During his interview with People Magazine, the Life As We Know It actor said of his new lifestyle:

"We're at a place now where it feels done. It's completely livable now. It's so back to the basics. We get so accustomed to all these luxuries and these amenities that we have and I think that's what this is for me—it's an opportunity to get back to the basics and really enjoy the simple things in life, and that's family, that's friends, that's making memories."

The father-of-two shares a son, Axl, 11, with his former wife, Fergie. He is currently married to Audra Mari, with whom he shares an 18-month-old son named Shepherd.

"We're deep in the woods out there, so it is fun,” he said of his home. “There are bald eagles everywhere, there are otters swimming with their little babies all over the place. We are constantly fighting the mice from getting into the cabins,” Josh Duhamel quipped. “That's a constant man versus nature struggle we deal with.”

Back in 2023, as reported by Page Six, the actor reiterated his love for living away from Hollywood and relocating to a cabin in the woods.

“I’ve become a bit of a doomsday prepper, I guess,” he told Inverse at the time. “I’m building something so if things do go south, I have a place to take my family.” Josh Duhamel continued, “I have this crazy fixation on what happens if s–t hits the fan in LA and I have to take my family out there and live off the land."

Speaking with Parade in April this year, Josh Duhamel recounted the reason for building his home, or as he called it at the time, his “big playground.”

“Part of the reason I built my place out in Minnesota, deep in the woods, is it’s removed from everything,” he said. “The closest store is 40 miles away. Once we get there, it’s really about everybody taking care of each other — making memories, spending time with family and friends. You really get a chance to get back to the basics. You’re not consumed by all these other distractions,” the Emmy winner added. “When you’re out there, it’s really about having fun, making sure everybody’s warm, everybody’s got food and water.”
