More than 20 years after the untimely passing of comedy icon Phil Hartman, fans of the comedian still celebrate his work in films and television, especially his iconic work on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons.
Of late, some fans have put forth the idea of a memorial for Hartman on Alcatraz Island, especially in the wake of President Donald Trump’s call to reopen the former prison. The recent developments have increased people's interest in Phil Hartman’s children and where they are today.
Now in her 30s, Phil Hartman’s daughter, Birgen Hartman, has largely kept out of the limelight, but there have been some moments when she has shared personal thoughts about her life on social media.
According to her LinkedIn profile, she has a degree in Communications and Journalism from the University of St. Thomas and has held several different jobs, such as barista, sales associate in a shoe store, and data entry clerk in a bank.
She married her husband, Brandon, in 2018 in Italy. Birgen is also a recovering addict who recently celebrated six years of sobriety and therefore uses her platform to spread awareness of addiction and recovery (Entertainment Now).
Her brother, Sean Edward Hartman, has followed an even more private life. According to Entertainment Now, he is believed to be living in Oakland, California, and following a career related to the arts. Sean had pursued his studies at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for some odd years, where he had shown interest in visual art, graphic design, and music.
More about Phil Hartman’s tragic death and the decision to honor him at Alcatraz
Phil Hartman was murdered on May 28, 1998, when his wife, Brynn, shot and killed him and then went on to kill herself. According to reports, she had been intoxicated with alcohol and had taken cocaine and the psychotropic drug Zoloft at that time.
Shortly after murdering Hartman, Brynn Hartman killed herself, leaving their two young children, Sean and Birgen, without parents. According to The Things, Sean and Birgen were then adopted by their maternal aunt, Cathy, and her husband in the Midwest.
According to probate records, his estate was initially left to his wife, Brynn Hartman. But as both parents were deceased, the will provided that the entire estate would pass to their children. The Hartmans' will specified that Sean Hartman and Birgen Hartman would inherit the money when they graduated from college or reached the age of 25, whichever came first.
Phil Hartman’s Alcatraz connection is resurfacing thanks to his memorable cameo in the 1993 film So I Married an Axe Murderer. According to the Daily Mail, playing acerbic tour guide Ranger John Vicky Johnson, Hartman provided one of the movie’s most memorable comic moments.
Now, fans are requesting that if and when Alcatraz is reopened, there should be at least some mention of Hartman’s funny and spooky TV performance on the Island.
