Who is Alberto Del Rio and what is he doing now? Former WWE wrestler kicked off Venga la Algeria following an on-air altercation

José Alberto Rodríguez, aka Alberto Del Rio and Alberto El Patrón, was recently involved in an on-air scuffle. The ex-WWE wrestler was a guest on Venga la Alegría. On the Mexican morning TV show, he attacked El Hijo del Vikingo’s father during the May 29 broadcast. After the Thursday incident, the pro wrestler was escorted off the set.

For those unaware, Alberto Del Rio is signed to Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide as Alberto El Patrón. He is the AAA Mega Champion, in his second reign since August last year. Del Rio will face El Hijo del Vikingo in a title match on May 31, and his recent on-air altercation was seemingly a part of the buildup for the fight.

Alberto is the son of Dos Caras, a Mexican masked Luchador. Del Rio started wrestling in 2000 and has since appeared in promotions like Ring of Honor, Lucha Underground, and more. Rodríguez earned mainstream fame during his time at WWE, where he held multiple titles.

Del Rio made his debut for World Wrestling Entertainment in 2009. Within two years, José Alberto Rodríguez won the 2011 Royal Rumble and earned an opportunity to headline WrestleMania that year. For the unversed, Alberto Del Rio entered at #38 during the 40-man match. The Royal Rumble featured John Cena, Randy Orton, Kane, Mark Henry, and many more. Ultimately, Rodríguez eliminated The Viper to win.

After his Royal Rumble victory, Alberto Del Rio faced Edge at WrestleMania 27 in a losing cause. Still, Alberto De Rio ended his first stint as a four-time WWE World Champion, including two World Heavyweight Championship wins, per Cagematch.net. Alberto also won the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2011 and cashed it at SummerSlam against CM Punk.

Del Rio also faced a temporary release in August 2014 after an altercation with an employee. He eventually made a return to face John Cena at Hell in a Cell and end his WWE United States Championship reign. Alberto became the US Champion one more time before his final release from WWE following a 30-day suspension due to the violation of talent wellness policy, per ESPN.

Del Rio posted about the conclusion of his second stint at WWE on X (formerly Twitter),

“My business relationship with @WWE has come to an end in good terms...thanks for the opportunities they gave me. Termine mi relación con WWE”

On the personal front, Del Rio was married to Angela Velkei for years until their divorce in June 2016. Angela, who was the mother of Alberto’s three children, passed away in May 2022. The pro wrestler penned a heartfelt tribute for Velkei, sharing the news with his followers on X.

As mentioned, Alberto Del Rio currently holds the AAA Mega Championship. He will defend the title against Hijo del Vikingo in Mexico City’s Gimnasio Olímpico Juan de la Barrera. In April, WWE announced the acquisition of AAA, and Vikingo appeared on Monday Night Raw earlier this week, setting up a match against Chad Gable at Worlds Collide.

Many believe that the announcement of the upcoming match has already spoiled the result of the AAA Mega Championship, i.e., Alberto El Patrón’s defeat.
