Alex Foster, an 18-year-old college athlete, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Baylor Bears (Baylor University) confirmed their defensive lineman’s death in a joint statement from football head coach Dave Aranda and VP/director of athletics at the university, Mack B. Rhoades, IV.
“We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a beloved teammate, friend and a cherished part of the Baylor Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Alex's family and all those who loved him. In this time of deep sorrow, we draw strength from our faith and the unwavering love of the Baylor community.”
They added,
“Our immediate focus is on supporting Alex's family and his teammates through this devastating loss. Alex's memory will forever be a part of Baylor University.”
Foster was a redshirt freshman last year and sat out during his first year at Baylor University. The six-foot-five college athlete, who weighed 292 pounds, was fatally shot during the early hours of May 28, the Clarion Ledger reported. According to the Mississippi-based newspaper, the Washington County Coroner's Office revealed that Alex Foster died after an alleged shooting incident in Greenville.
Per the Clarion Ledger, the Greenville Police Department responded to a call about shots being fired at 1800 E Alexander St. The authorities received the call around 12:11 am on Tuesday, after which they found Alex Foster in a car. The college athlete was shot multiple times and was rushed to Delta Health Center, according to the Clarion Ledger. Foster died 35 minutes after reaching the hospital.

The promising college football player, who once represented St. Joseph High School (Madison, Mississippi), died in Greenville after suffering gunshot wounds. After Baylor University confirmed the news of Alex Foster’s demise on X, many sent their condolences.
“Awful news, condolences to his family and teammates 💔,” a user wrote.
“Hope we honor him during the Auburn game,” another user mentioned the Bears opening game for the 2025 season.
“Truly broken for your fan base. And that poor family. I hope Bear Nation plays lights out in his honor this season,” someone also shared a similar opinion.
“Wow. This is so tough to hear. Such a tragic loss. Baylor nation, we’re sending love yalls way, and most importantly to Alex’s family. 🙏,” another one said.
Dave Aranda (@CoachDaveAranda), head coach for Baylor Bears football, posted a separate tribute to Alex on X and wrote,
“Alex was a beloved member of our Baylor Family, and we are devastated by this loss. In his time at Baylor he made a long-lasting impact on all of us in the program. Our hearts are broken, and our prayers are with his family, friends and all those who loved him so deeply.”
According to his profile on Baylor University’s website, Alex Foster was a four-star defensive lineman at his high school. Rivals and 247Sports rated him as a three-star recruit, with the latter including him as a “No. 18 prospect in Mississippi and the 69th-best defensive lineman.” On3 rated Foster as a four-star prospect while keeping him as the “No. 152 overall recruit” in the country.
