Armen Boladian is a former record producer, George Clinton's former business partner and founder of Detroit-based Westbound Records in 1970. He is the head of the 1969 established Bridgeport Music, a catalogue company which has most of George Clinton's catalogue.
Clinton has filed a $100 million copyright lawsuit on March 11 in Florida federal court against Boladian and his Bridgeport Music company, allegedly accusing Boladian of fraudulently obtaining copyrights to almost 90% of his catalogue.
The lawsuit accuses Boladian and several of his companies of engaging in a "decades long scheme" of forging his signature on deals to obtain rights to his music. Clinton is requesting a court order to immediately prevent Boladian from seeking bids for the rights to his music, which Boladian has allegedly been trying to sell. He is leveraging a provision in copyright law that enables creators to reclaim the rights to their work after a certain period.
Richard Busch, Boladian's lawyer, mentioned that this isn't the first time Clinton has filed a lawsuit against his client,
"This is just the latest in a series of lawsuits that Mr. Clinton has filed against Bridgeport and Armen Boladian over the last 30 years raising the same exact issues. He has lost each and every time."
George Clinton holds press conference to announce lawsuit against Armen Boladian
As per Variety, George Clinton held a press conference outside of the Apollo Theatre to announce the lawsuit against Armen Boladian. His attorney Ben Crump, and fellow counsel, were also present at the conference.
"These songs we're talking about is my history. I have to fight for them, I have to make sure that I did not do all of this my whole life and have my family here, not get what's due to them, what they inherit. We don't have a chance to pass down 40 acres and mules to our families. We do not have the copyrights for the songs. So I'm here along with Ben and partners to make sure Armen does not get what we worked so hard for."
Boladian was Clinton's business partner and agent from 1968 to 1975, and 1981 to 1990. The two have been engaging in legal drama since 1981, with Boladian filing a defamation lawsuit against Clinton. In 2021, the jury ruled against Boladian noting that the musician did not defame the producer.
Clinton is now requesting a jury trial.
