Betty Bayo's death in the morning of November 10, 2025, has sent waves through the Kenyan gospel community. The gospel singer, Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, was secretly battling leukaemia for some time and succumbed to it. She died while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, just a few days short of her birthday on 24 November.

The singer was born in Nyandaru and spent her childhood in Ol Kalou before moving to Kiambu. Betty came from a humble family and had to drop out of school due to financial struggles. In the meantime, she started working as a house help, eventually returning to school to complete her education after the financial conditions got better.

Her song "Eleventh Hour" was her first hit, which then became a gospel hymn sang throughout churches in all of West Africa. It served as a breakthrough after which she made more songs titled Ngai Ti Mundu, Jemedari, Maneno, Busy Busy, and Siyabonga.

Over the years, she became an iconic gospel singer in Kenya.

Her death was deemed to be a great loss to the Kenyan gospel community as Bishop Muthee Kiengei stated:

“She leaves behind a legacy of a great contribution in the growth of the Gospel Music industry, friendship, and a soul that maximised its full potential.”

Betty Bayo's marriage and relationship with Pastor Victor Kanyari

Betty Bayo's marriage to Pastor Victor Kanyari was filled with ups and downs. She has two children, a son named Danny and a daughter named Sky Victor, from her previous marriage to Pastor Victor Kanyari, the founder of Salvation Healing Ministry, a controversial figure.

Following a television investigation, he was caught being involved in a scandal where they connected Victor to fictitious miraculous claims and the infamous KSh 310 "seed offering" dispute. The couple's marriage fell apart in 2015. Betty broke up with the pastor following the scandal, claiming emotional stress and a lack of confidence.

For the benefit of their kids, the two co-parent with each other even after separating back in 2015 and with separate partners.

Kanyari was seen standing next to her current husband, Tash, when the doctor broke the news of the gospel singer's death. Kanyari was seen getting emotional as he found out about the news.

Finding love again with Hiram "Tash" Gitau

After years of rebuilding her life, Betty Bayo has found love again in Hiram Gitau, aka Tosh AU, a content creator and businessman. They had a private marriage in December 2021 with only family and close friends in attendance.

Bayo, in previous interviews, had admitted to almost giving up on love before Tosh came along. Speaking to K24 Digital, she said:

“Someday someone will walk into your life and make you realise why it didn’t work out with anyone else.”

She added:

“One day, by God’s grace we will tell our story not to brag or to hurt anyone but to encourage those that have given up in love and family. I was once an ambassador for giving up on love company.”

Betty Bayo was praised by many for raising her kids in a blended family, with two dads and two moms. Something that many kids do not get when their parents separate.

The whole of Kenyan gospel music is in sorrow as Betty Bayo passes away. Her legacy as a gospel singer will live on.
