Bryant Gumbel, the former host of The Today Show, was recently hospitalized after suffering an unspecified health issue. According to People Magazine, the incident, which took place earlier this week, on Monday, October 20 required him to be taken to a local hospital at around 9 p.m. Gumbel, who is now married to Hillary Quinlan Gumbel, has two children, daughter Jillian Beth Gumbel and son Bradley Christopher Gumbel from his first marriage to June Baranco.

Bryant Gumbel, who is seventy-seven years old, has had an illustrious career in television. He began co-hosting The Today Show in 1982, and continued doing so until 1997. It was his work on the show that would earn him his first Emmy. He later went on to host the popular HBO show "Real Sports with Bryan Gumbel," for which he won a Peabody Award in 2012. Gumbel's health scare on Monday comes just ten months after the death of his older brother, renowned sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel, who passed away in December 2024 from pancreatic cancer.

Bryant Gumbel was first married to June Baranco from 1973 until their highly contested divorce in 2001, after twenty-eight years of marriage. According to Closer Magazine, the former couple had met through a mutual friend. They welcomed their first child, a son, Bradley Christopher Gumbel, six years later in 1976 and their second child, Jillian Beth Gumbel in 1983. Both of Gumbel's children lead somewhat private lives away from the spotlight.

In a 1990 interview with Tampa Bay Times, Bryant Gumbel explained how he remained involved in the lives of his children despite his busy schedule. He said:

"It’s true that Daddy’s known, but there’s never been a day when Daddy wasn’t on TV — so Brad and Jillian are used to it. And I’m hardly a stranger at home. I’m there every night for dinner and spend every weekend with the kids, taking Brad to his basketball game, cooking breakfast and dinner for the family, shopping for their clothes and helping them with homework."

Bradley Christopher Gumbel, who was previously reported to work as an events planner, attended Lynn University. He later transferred to Manhattanville University, a private college in New York, but eventually dropped out.

According to CBS News, back in 2002, a twenty-four year old Bradley Gumbel was arrested by authorities on charges of allegedly being involved in an incident of purse snatching. At the time his mother, June Baranco told the New York Post in an interview that she did not believe her son could do such a thing, adding how "docile and even kind-spirited" he was as a person.

However, just a day later, it was reported that he had been released from custody, after it was discovered that he had been arrested on the basis of a mistaken identity. His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, had released a statement about the incident, at that time saying:

"I have just been informed that the prosecutor has declined to prosecute Bradley at this time. No charges are pending against him. But as a technical matter the prosecutors have the right to continue to investigate the matter. We believe by the end of the day, the matter will be dropped."

Bryant Gumbel's daughter, Jillian Beth Gumbel, attended Sarah Lawrence College, from where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree. Afterward, she pursued a career as a yoga instructor. According to The New York Times, she married William Russell Robins in November 2011. Jillian has since welcomed two children with her husband and is often seen posting pictures of her family.

According to TMZ, a source close to Bryant Gumbel said in a statement to the outlet that the award-winning host was now reportedly doing "okay."
