Cam Newton's expanding family continues to spark debates among netizens after the retired NFL quarterback revealed he is about to be a father for the ninth time. His children’s mothers are Kia Proctor, LaReina Shaw, and Jasmin Brown. With these three women, Newton has eight biological and stepchildren. Proctor has four, Shaw has two, while Brown is expecting their second child.

Kia Proctor is Newton’s long-term ex and the biological mother of four of his children: Chosen, Camidas, Cashmere, and Sovereign-Dior. Proctor also has a daughter named Shakira, whom Newton has helped raise.

LaReina Shaw previously had children with other partners, but Newton later adopted some of them as well. He embraced Shaw’s son Jaden from her previous relationship, apart from having a son named Caesar with her. His current partner, comedian and actress Jasmin Brown, gave birth to their first child in March 2024, and with the second on the way, she confirmed her pregnancy with a Mother’s Day Instagram post on May 11, 2025.

The announcement triggered fierce criticism on social media, with a number of fans condemning Cam Newton for promoting “broken homes” and showcasing neglectful fatherhood.

Responding to the backlash, Newton spoke on the matter in public and recounted what he said during a May 2025 interview on the Club Shay Shay Podcast,

“It takes something out of me when people say I’m creating broken homes. That’s not who I am.”

He likewise reiterated how biological and non-biological children are all the same to him. Cam Newton stated in the podcast:

“I don’t believe in stepchildren”

He continued:

“What my biological kids get, everybody gets. I am raising kings and queens.”

Regardless, Newton maintains that the intention behind his family expansion is purposeful love rather than carelessness.

“I’m just a man”: Cam Newton reflects on regret and resilience

In an interview on the reality show Special Forces, Cam Newton discussed one of the most sensitive aspects of his—having a child out of wedlock while in a relationship with Proctor. He shared:

“My dark side in my life was like I was in a long-term relationship and I had a child outside my relationship”

He added:

“We had just moved into a house and everything was kind of perfect from the outside in… and my relationship with my oldest daughter has suffered. All she kept asking was, ‘Yo, why?’”

Newton confessed that he is yet to come to terms with the most frightening part of this situation.

This is something that the former quarterback had to deal with, in addition to the emotional and financial issues that came with having to retire from the NFL.

“Being away from the game for three years, those checks don’t come in the same,” he said on Special Forces. “It hurts knowing I can’t provide like I once did. It hurts thinking I’m Superman, but in reality, I’m just a man.”

In any case, “peace” and “encouragement” are how Cam Newton refers to his children. He explained that they are the ones who give him a sense of purpose, even in his darkest days.
