French actress and former ballerina Charlotte Arnould made headlines in 2018 when she accused the iconic French actor Gérard Depardieu of raping her. Her claim was one of the first and most high-profile sexual assault allegations against the French actor, whose reputation has since been tarnished by multiple allegations from different individuals.
Charlotte Arnould was born in Aix-en-Provence, France, in 1995, and has worked as both a dancer and an actor. She is fluent in French, English, and Spanish. According to a report by E-Talenta, she is an expert in a variety of dances, including ballet, classical, ballroom, flamenco, jazz dance, waltz, tango, and more.
Apart from dancing, Charlotte Arnould's other interests and skills include singing, playing the piano, and participating in multiple sports. She completed her acting studies at Laboratoire de l'Acteur in 2016.
According to Economictimes, Charlotte Arnould was supposedly in her early 20s when the attack occurred. In a complaint filed with the Paris prosecutor’s office, Arnould stated that she was raped and sexually assaulted twice by Depardieu at his Paris home in August 2018.
However, despite the seriousness of the accusation, her case was dropped in 2019 due to insufficient evidence but was later reopened in 2020.
More about Charlotte Arnould's fight for justice as Gérard Depardieu was found guilty of sexual assault
Depardieu, who has more than 250 films to his credit, including an Oscar-nominated performance in "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1990), was widely respected in the French film industry. But in recent years, allegations have piled up, with over 20 women coming forward with accounts of sexual misconduct, including verbal harassment and assault involving Gérard Depardieu.
Charlotte Arnould has spoken out about her experience and emerged as a symbol of resilience for many in France’s nascent #MeToo movement.
Most recently, she voiced her support for Amélie and Sarah, the two women whom Depardieu was found guilty of raping in 2021 while he was working on the movie The Green Shutters. Arnould released a powerful message on her Instagram story after the verdict was announced.
"Immense thought to Amélie and Sarah." She wrote on her instagram story.
Gérard Depardieu was convicted of sexually assaulting two women by the Paris Criminal Court and received an 18-month suspended prison sentence. The court also ruled that the 76-year-old actor must register as a sex offender and pay a fine of about €29,040, or approximately $32,350.
According to PBS News, Depardieu, who did not appear in court, is expected to appeal. The court noted that his defense had become forceful against the accusers, resulting in the severity of punishment.
