Chuck Redd made headlines after he pulled out of performing for the annual holiday show at the Trump-Kennedy Center on Wednesday. The New York Post has reported that the concert was canceled in protest of the venue's imminent name change. Just last week, its board of directors, which is chaired by President Trump, voted to rename the performing arts center to the Trump-Kennedy Center. The move prompted Redd, 67, the host of the show, to axe his performance. For the unversed, the jazz musician has been helming the holiday "Jazz Jams" at the Kennedy Center since 2006. He is a jazz drummer and vibraphonist, and has been touring since he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at the age of 21. Everything we know about President Trump's involvement in renaming the Trump-Kennedy Center: In a statement to the Associated Press, he said: “When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert." He told CNN, “I’ve been performing at the Kennedy Center since the beginning of my career and I was saddened to see this name change." Maria Shriver, Kennedy’s niece, also weighed in on the institution's decision, calling it "beyond comprehension." Another niece, Kerry, pledged to drop Trump's name from the Trump-Kennedy Center after he leaves office. As of last week, the front of the building reads The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. Per the White House, the president’s board approved the move, which several outlets and scholars have said is in violation of the law. According to NBC News, following President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Congress passed a law that named the institution in his honor. The law prohibits the board of trustees from making the center a tribute to anyone else, and putting someone else's name on its facade. According to NBC News, President Trump has long rallied for significant changes at the institution, including forcing out its leaders, hand-picking its board members, naming himself its head, and hosting this year’s Kennedy Center honors himself. The move put an end to a long-standing tradition of presidents typically acting as spectators. Several figures have slammed the president's latest move, which, according to the outlet, comes amid his larger goal of fighting "woke" culture at federal cultural institutions. Issa Rae, Peter Wolf, and Lin-Manuel Miranda have all axed performances at the institution in retaliation. Stay tuned to SoapCentral for more.
