Canadian actress Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe, well-known for her roles in Black Christmas, Final Destination 3, has been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.
The 44-year-old actress, who is married to Miko Tomasevich, shared the news in a personal essay through People Magazine on October 10.
She said it was February 2025 when she found a lump on her right breast. Initially, she thought it was a muscle issue that could have possibly happened while working out. The actress wrote:
“To be safe, I immediately went to my doctor who ordered a mammogram and guided ultrasound, but found nothing.”
However, the mass on the part of her body did not vanish but changed the size. As a result, she visited her doctor once again. The size of the lump was 10 centimeters, and her doctor sent her for a blind biopsy. Then, the doctor told her that despite the uncertainty, it could be cancerous. Crystal Lowe wrote:
“I just stared at him, blinking as if I hadn’t heard him correctly. “I don’t have cancer,” I thought. “That’s crazy.” But deep down, something inside me whispered, “What if?””
A few days later, she got a call from her medical professional who told her that she had invasive carcinoma. The news made her emotional. Sharing how her husband handled the situation, Crystal Lowe wrote:
“My amazing husband gracefully gave me that space to process, and then, about an hour later, allowed my three-year-old into the bedroom dressed in his new Spider-Man costume. I couldn’t stop laughing as he struck pose after pose, making sound effects like he was shooting webs from his wrists. They say it’s laughter, but our children really are the best medicine.”
“My husband and family, have been my rock”: Crystal Lowe writes about chemotherapy, support, and what she learnt
After the diagnosis came out, she learnt that she had invasive ductal carcinoma at stage 3. At the time, everything became overwhelming for her, and she decided to reach out to others who had similar experiences. Crystal Lowe said learning and getting tips from others helped her a lot. Her personal essay continued:
“My next step was to call my colleagues. When I called Annie Howell at Hallmark to tell her the news, I was terrified. What if I never work again? What if they forget me? But nothing could be further from the truth. Annie and the entire Hallmark family embraced me fully, and told me that they had my back.”
The plan of action for her treatment was to minimize the tumor so that the doctor could perform surgery. However, Crystal Lowe had to consult a naturopath to be aware of her dietary needs. Writing about the support she received from everyone, she wrote:
“I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by so much love and support. My husband and family, have been my rock. And my friends? They’ve wrapped me up like a blanket — visiting, checking in, cleaning my house and creating an incredible meal train that has fed my body and my heart.”
Crystal Lowe shared that her journey had been frightening, unusual, and had taught her a lot. It had challenged her physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Despite that, she promised to keep going, learn from the hard times, and become stronger each day.
