The director, unfortunately, collapsed while filming on set in Venice. A local doctor confirmed the assistant director's death, saying he likely died of “a sudden heart attack.” The on-set medical staff had tried to revive Borella, but he died at the scene.

A Paramount Television Studios spokesperson told PEOPLE magazine in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Diego Borella was pronounced dead after collapsing while filming in Italy at around 7:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 21. Local news outlets such as La Repubblica, Il Messaggero, and Corriere della Sera were first to report. The tragedy took place during preparation for a scene inside Hotel Danieli, where they were shooting the fifth season of the Netflix show. Borella was overseeing the shooting of the final scene.

“Our ambulance arrived at 18.42 (on Thursday evening). Medics made attempts to resuscitate him. But in the end, all efforts proved fruitless. At around 19.30, he was pronounced deceased,” The Independent reported.

Diego Borella was born in Venice and had worked widely in film and TV. His career had taken him across Rome, London, and New York before he returned to Italy.

Days before, Lily Collins, who plays the character of Emily, had posted images from her time in Venice while shooting, along with her co-star, Ashley Park. The filming was consequently suspended till August 23. Netflix has set the release date of season 5 for December 18.
