Portuguese footballer Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, commonly known as Diogo Jota, died in a fatal car accident on July 3, 2025, in northern Spain. Jota, who played as a left winger or forward, was just 28.

He was travelling in his luxury sports car, a Lamborghini, along with his brother Andre, 26, who also died in the accident. According to the Daily Mail, Diogo Jota, who recently got hitched to his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, 2025, hurtled off a road in Cernadilla, which is near the city of Zamora in northwestern Spain.

Diogo Jota and his brother Andre's fatal car crash took place on the A-52 highway, which falls in the province of Zamora. Jota's accident occurred around 12:35 a.m. on Thursday, as confirmed by the Castilla and Leon region's emergency services. As per the Daily Mail, a statement read:

"The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire."

The statement further added:

"1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident. From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene."

Diogo, who was widely known for his extremely fast pace and exceptional dribbling ability, besides playing for the Portugal national team, also played for Liverpool F.C. The unfortunate death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was confirmed by the head of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proenca.

According to the Daily Mail, Pedro Proenca, in a statement, shared how devastated and heartbroken the entire football community of Portugal is. He said:

"The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning, in Spain."

While praising Diogo Jota, Proenca said:

"Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself."

He continued by saying:

"On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players. The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute's silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women's European Championship."

He further added:

"Lost to two champs. The disappearance of Diogo and Andre Silva represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything to, daily, honor their legacy."

While the news of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre's death came as a shock to the fans and every football enthusiast around the world, the Portuguese forward took to Instagram to share footage of his wedding with Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three kids, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. On the other hand, even Rute took to her Instagram handle and shared pictures from their wedding day and captioned it "My dream came true". Diogo took to the comments section and wrote, "I'm the lucky one".
