Ed Buckner, former THV11 chief meteorologist, passed away on Monday at the age of 59 after a battle with cancer. Buckener, who joined the THV11 weather team in 1996, is widely known among Arkansans for his coverage of the January 1999 tornado outbreak.
According to the THV11 website, Ed Buckner was born on June 17, 1965, and is survived by his wife and four children. One of his daughters, Brooke Buckner, is a part of THV11's reporting team. Her joining news was reported by the channel on May 26, 2022. Unfortunately, this is not the first cancer death in the family, as one of his daughters, Ashton Eakin, passed away due to cancer in 2019.
According to THV11, his longtime co-worker, Tom Brannon, referred to him as a great friend and mentor, and shared that.
“He was truly Arkansas’s Weatherman. He had this calm urgency when tracking severe weather, and I know fellow Arkansans felt safe and comfortable with him leading the way. He will be missed.”
Meanwhile, former THV11 anchor Craig O’Neill shared that,
“There’s a word that sums up his career, his life, his legacy: trust. Our trust in Ed never wavered and is why our memory will never die.”
More about Ed Buckner and his family
Ed Buckner got his meteorology degree from Mississippi State University. He joined THV11 as a part of the weather team in the year 1996 and went on to become the chief meteorologist.
According to THV11, Buckner during his 25 years covered many storms, though one of his most remarkable reports happened on January 21, 1999, when he and his team tracked about 56 tornadoes. Buckner retired from his position in 2020 because of complications from Tourette Syndrome.
According to Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Buckner, while announcing his departure from THV11 as chief meteorologist, shared on his Facebook in 2020 that,
"A lot of you may remember my message of ‘Everybody’s got something,’ I used during my school talks about acceptance. It’s true. Everyone does have something they are dealing with, and Tourette Syndrome has been my biggest struggle for years now.”
Outside of work, Ed Buckner showed love for music, and in 2001, he even released an album for kids consisting of weather-related songs, titled Weather Songs for Kids, THV11 reports. This musical inclination can also be seen in his daughter, Brooke.
