Elijah Blue Allman, Cher’s estranged son with late rock star Gregg Allman, has spent a good portion of his life surrounded by controversial legal battles, addiction, and family dysfunction.

For Elijah Blue Allman, his relationship with his parents has been far more complex. His mother has been in and out of the spotlight during the feuds and the interventions, expressing her worry for her son. On the other hand, it seems like his father was much more distant to Elijah.

Gregg Allman was the famous singer, songwriter, and rock and blues pioneer who founded The Allman Brothers Band with his late brother, Duane Allman. According to Rolling Stone, Allman was born in 1947, and he suffered a difficult childhood that included his father’s murder and a distant relationship with his mother.

With his brother Duane, he gained a passion for blues and rock, and the brothers formed the Allman Brothers Band in 1969. Their 1971 live album, At Fillmore East, was a classic hit. Their success was soon followed by Duane's death in a motorcycle accident.

Gregg Allman left behind a musical legacy that won him millions of devoted fans, which led to him being included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Behind the public fame and success, however, his personal life was one of struggles that often affected his job as a father, as he fought against addiction to heroin, alcohol, and other substances (Inquisitr).

Elijah Blue Allman was born in 1976, while Gregg and Cher had a short-lived and stormy marriage. The couple divorced in 1979, and Cher basically raised Elijah on her own.

His mother, as explained by Elijah himself, carefully distanced Gregg from his life when he was young. In a 2006 interview, Elijah explained that he knew his father was around, but the two were not particularly close when he was a child.

"I think my mom was smart to sort of keep him at bay, when I had just enough to make it so that I knew that he was there," He told Howard Stern in an interview.

His emotional detachment from his father left its own mark on Elijah. Elijah Blue Allman confessed that he looked for father figures in the boys his mother dated after Gregg. “I was really gripping for a dad,” he said, echoing how he clung to older male figures in pursuit of stability and direction.

It was only after Elijah grew older that he saw more of his dad, who even took him on the road while performing. But by then the emotional distance between them had already set in. Elijah observed that their bond never completely formed, and even as an adult, he still felt the effect of the early rift.

"My relationship with him is still that of a dude who didn’t have a relationship with his dad ever," Elijah Blue Allman told Howard Stern.

Elijah Blue Allman has previously revealed the depths of his drug addiction and revealed that he had been addicted for eight years to deal with the emotional trauma. He said that he heavily consumed while touring by shooting heroin, popping pills, and drinking (SCMP).

Through the years, he went through a series of rehab visits attempting to get clean. Most recently, court documents noted that he claimed Elijah was sober and in treatment to get well.
