Ewan McGregor has been married more than once. His most recent marriage was to actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead. According to a report published by People, the two met on the set of FX’s Fargo in late 2016, when both joined the cast for the third season, portraying on-screen love interests. At that time, Ewan McGregor was still married to his former wife, Eve Mavrakis, while Winstead was with her then-husband, Riley Stearns. After both of their marriages ended, the co-stars began seeing each other.

In 2021, Ewan McGregor and Winstead welcomed their first child together, a son named Laurie, following nearly four years of dating. They tied the knot a year later, in April 2022. Shortly after Laurie’s birth, Ewan McGregor earned an Emmy Award for his performance as designer Roy Halston Frowick in Netflix’s Halston. During his acceptance speech, the Star Wars actor expressed his gratitude to Winstead and his children, including his four daughters from his marriage to Mavrakis.

“Mary, I love you so much. I’m gonna take this home and show it to our new little boy, Laurie. And to my beautiful girls who I know are watching,” he shared.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Ewan McGregor is set to receive BAFTA Scotland’s highest honor for his outstanding contribution to film.

Before he became one of Britain’s most recognizable screen talents, Ewan McGregor had exploded onto the scene with Trainspotting in the mid-1990s. His energy and edge made him a breakout star, one who would soon wield a lightsaber as Obi-Wan Kenobi and later sing his heart out opposite Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge!.

Decades later, McGregor is recognized for that remarkable career, as BAFTA Scotland announced he would receive its highest honor, the Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television Award, at next month’s ceremony in Glasgow.

“It’s so lovely to be thought of... I am excited to go to the event and looking forward to meeting with my peers,” McGregor shared.

His relationship with BAFTA Scotland stretched back years; he had already taken home two of its awards, for Trainspotting in 1996 and Young Adam in 2003. Jude MacLaverty, the organization’s director, summed up the sentiment:

“Ewan is a talented and much-loved Scottish actor who has captivated audiences here at home and globally.”

McGregor’s creative path had never been limited to acting. In 2016, he made his directorial debut with American Pastoral, working alongside Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning. In 2024, he was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and earlier that year, he returned to the West End in My Master Builder at Wyndham’s Theatre, performing with Elizabeth Debicki.

When it came to his personal life, Ewan McGregor has lived much of it in the public eye, a natural result of his A-list status. His divorce from his first wife, Eve Mavrakis, in January 2018 had drawn significant attention, with irreconcilable differences cited as the reason for their split.

By then, the couple shared four children: Clara, Esther, Jamyan, and Anouk. Their two youngest daughters had both been adopted, and the stories behind those adoptions remained deeply moving.

Jamyan McGregor was born in June 2001 in Mongolia and was adopted by McGregor and Mavrakis in April 2006, when she was four years old. During the filming of a television series in Mongolia, McGregor visited a children’s shelter where he first met her. He spoke about the experience years later in his documentary series Long Way Up.

“I left that day, but I couldn’t stop thinking about that little girl, it took nearly two years, but eventually we adopted Jamyan,” he shared.

At his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, McGregor shared a heartfelt tribute to her, saying,

“Jamyan, my beautiful daughter Jamyan, I’m not going to be acting with Jamyan because Jamyan is going to be a homicide detective.”

In an interview with Variety, while discussing A Gentleman in Moscow, McGregor, now married to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, reflected on how he connected with his character, who becomes a caretaker for a young girl.

“I realised while we were shooting, like, ‘Oh, this is an adoption story.’ I like that part of it because I love that part of my life,” he said.

The Star Wars actor went on to add,

“I think it’s true that we are two different people before we have children and after we have children – you don’t have this responsibility to another human life, you don’t ever experience it until somebody calls you Dad.”
