Who is Fernando Mendoza’s mom? Heisman Trophy winner dedicates award to mother Elsa 

This year’s Heisman Trophy winner was the University of Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. He has left his mark on the Indiana Hoosiers football program as well as the state of India after an incredible stretch of performances for the school’s Division-I program.

In the most recent news about the soon-to-be pro football player, Fernando Mendoza has gone viral for his emotional Heisman speech. The most notable part of his acceptance speech was the extensive efforts he made to thank his mother, Elsa, for all her contributions to his success.

“Mami, this is your trophy as much as it is mine. You’ve always been my biggest fan. You’re my light, you’re my ‘why,’ you’re my biggest supporter.”

Fernando Mendoza would add,

“Your sacrifices, courage, love, those have been my first playbook and that playbook that I’m going to carry by my side for my entire life. You taught me that toughness doesn’t need to be loud. It can be quiet and strong. It’s choosing hope. It’s believing in yourself when the world doesn’t give you much reason to. Together, you and I are rewriting what people think is possible. I love you.”

The award ceremony took place on Saturday, December 13, in New York City. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza became the first Indiana player to earn the recognition in a rather one-sided vote.

In part, Fernando Mendoza’s mother is such a beacon of hope and promise for him due to her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis; it’s also partly due to her background in athletics. Elsa Mendoza was a former women’s collegiate tennis player at the University of Miami, and received her unfortunate MS diagnosis nearly 20 years ago. As a result, her movement has been drastically limited, although she has made it a point to attend Fernando’s games.

Elsa Mendoza shared a heartfelt letter to Fernando that was published on December 11. The letter sums up her feelings of pride for her son at this point in his journey.

“You are already everything I could have hoped for as a mother…. and that has nothing to do with the miles you throw or the touchdowns you score. It has everything to do with the man you’ve grown into. As an oldest brother who shows the way. As a hard worker who has an unstoppable spirit. As a Cuban American athlete who represents his community. As a leader who lifts up, and lends kindness, even when no one is looking.”

She added,

“You have a future that’s so bright and a heart that’s so full. My gentle giant. My darling son. My buddy. My teammate. I believe in you with every part of me.”

Fernando Mendoza is on his way to leading a successful and fulfilling life based on the values his family has seemingly instilled in him. The sky is truly the limit for Fernando.
