English producer and electronic musician David James Ball, better known as Dave Ball, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his London home on October 22, 2025, after years of ill health. He was 66.

Dave Ball was one-half of the synth-pop duo Soft Cell alongside vocalist Marc Almond. His death news was shared on the Soft Cell website, with Almond calling him a “wonderfully brilliant musical genius.”

Dave Ball’s ex-wife, Gini Hewes, whose real name was Virginia Ball (Hewes), was also a music professional. She was a violinist, singer, and composer, according to discogs.com.

David James Ball is survived by his four children and close family members. His last appearance came weeks back at the 20,000-strong Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames as part of Soft Cell’s headlining show.

Dave formed the band Other People with his then-wife and Andy Astle and released the only single, Have a Nice Day. Before that, Gini Hewes toured with Soft Cell as a backing vocalist. The former couple also co-wrote music for the stage production of Suddenly Last Summer.

Dave Ball and Gini Hewes together joined the English experimental video art and music collective Psychic TV, and worked on and off for six years. She also teamed up with Psychic TV founder and performance artist Genesis P. Orridge to work on the soundtrack of the movie, The Wanderer.

Between the years 1982-1983, she also collaborated with Marc Almond on his new wave group, Marc and the Mambas, as well as on his hit song, Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart with Gene Pitney.

Gini Hewes toured and recorded with other artists and bands, including Siouxie and the Banshees, Mike Hedges, Bernard Butler, Nick Cave, Virgin Prunes, and The Manic Street Preachers, among others.

Dave Ball’s ex-wife attended the Royal College of Music. Upon graduation, she founded the punk classical group called Humoresque with Anne Stephenson. Gini, Anne, and Sally Herbert also formed Brilliant Strings.

David James Ball was born in Chester, Cheshire, England, on May 3, 1959. He grew up in Blackpool. He met Marc Almond while studying at Leeds Polytechnic, and together they formed Soft Cell in 1979. Over the years, the duo released multiple albums, including The Art Of Falling Apart, This Last Night In Sodom, Cruelty Without Beauty, and Happiness Not Included.

In 1983, Dave released a solo album titled Strict Tempo, featuring Gavin Friday, Genesis P-Orridge, and Virginia Astley. Thereafter, he formed two short-lived bands, Other People and English Boy.

Ball co-founded The Grid with Richard Norris, known for the hit track Swamp Things. He worked as a producer with Vicious Pink Phenomena and collaborated with artists such as Kylie Minogue, David Bowie, Pet Shop Boys, and Erasure.

Before his demise, David James Ball recorded a brand-new studio album, Daceteria, for Soft Cell, which will be released in spring 2026. Another EP titled Martin is scheduled for an October 31 release, according to the group’s website.
