The “Queen of Philippine Cinema,” Gloria Romero, passed away at the age of 91 on 25 January 2025. Her daughter Maritess Gutierrez, had shared the news through her social media and thanked the fans and well-wishers for all the love and support.

Maritess Gutierrez, through her social media, announced the death of her mother while penning a heartfelt message. She wrote

“It is with great sadness to announce the passing of my beloved Mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez aka Gloria Romero, who peacefully joined our Creator earlier today.

Expressing gratitude to the people for their condolences, prayers, and support, saying,

“She will surely be missed dearly.”

Gloria Romero's wake will take place on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Chapel in Quezon City.


A Legendary Career: Gloria Romero, the “Queen of Philippine Cinema”

Gloria Romero was born Gloria Borrego Galla in the city of Denver, Colorado on January 16, 1933. Her career in the film industry started at the early age of 16. Her early entry into the Philippine film industry's golden era would define not just her career but also set the path for the foundation of Filipino filmmaking.

Romero's career spanned 70 years with her first appearance in the movie Cofradia. Which later shot her into fame. She quickly became a household name as her career developed. She appeared in classic films like Despachadora, Pilya, and Dalagang Ilocana (1954). For her performances, she was awarded the prestigious FAMAS Best Actress Award.

She delivered standout performances in films like Tanging Yaman (2000) and Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit (1989) opposite Nora Aunor. She also featured in films like Rainbow Sunset (2018), which explored aging and love, and Magnifico (2003), which was about sacrifice and family.

She also ventured into the TV industry, where she again delivered. She featured in Familia Zaragoza and Palibhasa Lalake. Her last appearance was in the show Daig Kayo Ng Lola Ko.

Her performances in the TV industry and the 21st century showcased her versatility and her ability as an actress who was loved by the fans.

With prestigious roles in over 250 movies and in the TV industry, for which she won multiple awards not only cemented her legacy as the most successful actress in Philippine history but as one of the greatest actresses of her time.

In addition to her acting, she was also loved for her kindness and sincerity. She was married to actor Juancho Gutierrez which ended after 12 years. They had children together, one of which is Maritess Gutierrez.

Gloria Romero's legacy as an actress in Philippine cinema and television will forever remain an inspiration to fans and actors.
