Actress Aubrey Plaza will be portraying former madam Heidi Fleiss in an upcoming biopic.
According to an exclusive report by Variety published on August 6, Plaza will also serve as the producer through her agency, Evil Hag, for The Heidi Fleiss Story. The project will be directed by Leah Rachel.
The casting director in charge of this film is Djinous Rowling. Los Angeles has been selected as the production site of the film. People Magazine notes that this is Aubrey Plaza’s first work since her husband, Jeff Baena’s, demise in January 2025.
For the unversed, Fleiss reportedly ran a brothel network, for which she was arrested. Born on December 30, 1965, Fleiss also worked as an actress and produced a few works. She was a cast member in the 2003 dark comedy Pauly Shore Is Dead.
Fleiss also played the role of a liquor store clerk in Gregg Araki’s 1995 crime-comedy, The Doom Generation. Her father was a well-known pediatrician at the time. According to IMDb, she was introduced to Madam Alex when she was 22 and gradually assumed Alex’s dealings.
She was apprehended in 1993 for her brothel ring. She also had to serve time from 1997 to 1998 on account of money laundering and tax evasion. Heidi Fleiss also wrote a few books, like The Player’s Handbook and Pandering, among others. People Magazine notes that she developed a new hobby, freeing caged birds like parrots.
In 2024, she told the outlet:
“These birds have no other option other than to live in a cage, die in a cage. Once I realized this problem existed, I couldn't continue living my life without doing something about it.”
Heidi Fleiss looks back on her arrest, rescuing macaws, and Madam Alex
In 2018, Heidi Fleiss spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, reflecting on completing 25 years of getting arrested in 1993. She shared that she felt like everything that happened in her life, even all the mistakes she made, helped her get to where she was.
She added that some people might think she was a little strange because she cared so much about the macaw birds she looked after. When asked how she took up the idea of rescuing birds, Heidi Fleiss said:
“I moved to Nevada to get it back into the sex business. I rented a house that unluckily for me happened to be next door to a retired madam who was bedridden. At one time she ran the exotic bird department for the Tropicana Hotel. So she had all these birds.”
She added:
“One night she called me up at three in the morning saying she couldn’t breathe. I went there as a helicopter was taking her away. As she’s dying, she says, ‘Heidi, you take care of the birds.’”
Heidi Fleiss reflected on Madam Alex, saying she was not in her right mind. However, she also explained that learning from someone wasn’t enough when it came to running an escort business. Fleiss added that it took a lot of thinking and planning, especially because it was important to make people feel safe and comfortable.
