Before audiences knew her as Lizzy Calvert in Titanic, Suzy Amis' life had been in the public eye, given her modelling career. She was signed with Ford Models, a chapter she later talked about in a 2019 interview with The Proof with Simon Hill. A career switch to acting from modelling was the next step, where she eventually ended up in James Cameron’s epic, starring as Rose's granddaughter, listening to her memories.

As per a report by People, Titanic also marked the beginning of her relationship with James Cameron. The soon-to-be lovers met in 1997 on the set, though their bond grew after the project wrapped. By 2000, they were married, and over time, welcomed three daughters. Both James Cameron and Suzy Amis are dedicated environmentalists. Amis has also authored a book titled The OMD Plan and produced documentaries, including Milked and The Game Changers.

James Cameron reflected on their dynamic in a 2017 Guardian interview, saying,

"Being attracted to strong independent women has the downside that they're strong independent women — they inherently don't need you, fortunately, I'm married now to a strong independent woman who does believe she needs me."

Suzy Amis had been married once before, to actor Sam Robards, whom she met during her first screen job, Fandango. This is Cameron's fifth marriage.

Most recently, the couple has made headlines because of the upcoming third installment of Cameron's Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash.

As per a report by The Daily Mail on 3 December 2025, the beautiful pair appeared affectionate on Monday at the premiere of Cameron’s new Avatar film, sharing laughs and embracing as they walked the red carpet together. Their public appearance arrived months after People reported on March 12, 2025, that Suzy Amis Cameron remains one of the strongest supporters of Cameron’s work. According to the outlet, she was deeply moved after watching Avatar: Fire and Ash, the upcoming third installment of the franchise, and “bawled for four hours.”

Cameron recalled the moment in a March 2025 interview with Empire.

“She kept trying to get her s--- back together so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d just tear up and start crying again, finally, I’m like, ‘Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time'," he shared.

Suzy Amis had long folded environmental work into nearly every part of her life. In 2018, she wrote The OMD Plan, a book built around a simple idea: eating one plant-based meal a day could help both the planet and the person consuming it. Her advocacy extended into film as well; she produced The Game Changers, a documentary that spotlighted athletes who thrived on plant-based diets.

She continued her work behind the camera too, serving as an executive producer on Junk, a 2023 Italian docuseries that examined fast fashion’s environmental cost. Suzy Amis and her husband, James Cameron, adopted a plant-based diet after watching Forks Over Knives in 2012. Suzy Amis told O, The Oprah Magazine, that the shift instantly turned them into enthusiastic evangelists, sometimes too enthusiastic.

"Jim and I eat only plant-based foods, and once we started, we were always on our soapbox — people ran in the other direction when they saw us coming. I realized we needed a more accessible approach, a plan," she shared.

Suzy Amis explained that even one plant-based meal a day could dramatically cut water use and carbon output while offering health benefits. The idea resonated widely; her “One Meal a Day” approach even convinced Oprah Winfrey to adopt at least one plant-based meal each day.

When sustainability met stardom: Suzy Amis Cameron’s mission to clean up the red carpet

Red carpets had never been an unfamiliar terrain for Suzy Amis Cameron, but the one she attended in 2010 changed her approach. She was looking for a dress to accompany James Cameron to the Oscars, where Avatar was nominated for nine awards. What she encountered instead was a lack of environmentally responsible fashion choices.

“I think it was the lack of sustainable options I faced, I realised there was an opportunity to have a more meaningful and impactful conversation on that red carpet,” she shared.

As per a report shared by Vogue on 27 April 2021, the experience sparked the creation of Red Carpet Green Dress, a women-led initiative that championed sustainable design and called attention to the environmental toll of fashion. The scale of that waste only became clear once she committed to the project.

“I don’t think I realised the actual impact of the waste when it comes to fashion until I started Red Carpet Green Dress and started to dive into it more, our impact is staggering,” she said.

Her initiative grew steadily. Over the next ten years, it built out collaborations with designers, launched internships and shared resources for students and emerging creators. Its highest-profile work appeared at the Oscars through ambassadors such as Kaitlyn Dever and Laura Harrier, who wore consciously made gowns from top fashion houses. Every dress relied on recycled or repurposed materials.

Marlee Matlin’s 2021 Oscars appearance became one of the initiative’s standout successes. The Academy Award-winning actor wore a Vivienne Westwood gown made from a black vegan textile using TENCEL Luxe filaments, combined with archival Westwood fabric. Westwood praised the collaboration, saying she was “delighted” to work with Amis Cameron and Red Carpet Green Dress.

“I think the project is a great idea and allows designers to think more about the fabrics they are working with – researching and thinking about choices that are more eco-friendly.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash premiered at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on December 1, 2025 and is scheduled to release on December 19, theatrically.
