Who is Jason Collins' husband Brunson Green? All about the Oscar-nominated film producer now married to NBA player

The famous NBA pioneer Jason Collins is in the news yet again, as the sportsman married his longtime love, Brunson Green. Collins made history in 2013 when he became the first active NBA player to openly identify as gay, and now, amidst his recent marriage, fans are wondering who his partner, Brunson Green, is and what he does for a living.

Brunson Green is a film producer and is mostly known for his work on the Academy Award-nominated film The Help. According to The Daily Beast, being a Jackson, Mississippi native, Green established his production company, Harbinger Pictures, in 1996.

He has worked in nearly every facet of the business for more than 20 years, from casting assistant and production manager to assistant director, before making his mark as a producer.

Prior to launching Harbinger Pictures, Green spent two decades working from assistant-level positions in the early 1990s. According to his LinkedIn profile, he graduated from Trinity University with a degree in economics and sociology.

Green’s career breakthrough came in 2011 with The Help, a period drama adaptation of the bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett. Directed by Tate Taylor, the film was well received by the audience and received a multitude of award nominations, including a nomination for Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards.

A look into Jason Collins and Brunson Green's relationship timeline

Brunson Green and Jason Collins met in Los Angeles for the first time. But Collins says their love story wasn’t immediate. The retired NBA star, speaking in an interview with Sports Illustrated in 2023, described being with someone else when he first met Green during a housewarming party.

It wasn’t until they saw one another again a few months later, when Collins was single, that the duo started dating each other. He added,

"By that point, I was single again. Brunson left for Europe the following day, and, while he was overseas, I asked everyone I knew in L.A., 'Have you heard of this guy?'"

Brunson Green is 11 years older than the former player.

The couple married in May 2025 in Austin, Texas. The celebration itself featured performances by local drag queens and a Disney duet at the rehearsal dinner.

Jason Collins came out in 2013 in an essay for Sports Illustrated and was greeted with support from fans, teammates, and public figures, including former President Obama and the late basketball star Kobe Bryant.

But 10 years later, only one other male athlete from the major leagues, Carl Nassib, has come out. Jason Collins states that more people within the sports industry are afraid to come out due to several fears, such as fear of being judged, fear of being rejected and fear of the intense spotlight. He told Sports Illustrated,

"There are others in powerful positions within the NBA and other major sports. Owners, general managers, coaches, trainers who are reluctant to reveal their sexuality."
