More about Jaylen Brown's family, as his father is arrested for Las Vegas stabbing incident

Jaylen Brown was born on October 24, 1996 to parents, Quenton Marselles Brown and Mechalle Brown. Not much is known about his parents' marriage, but they divorced at some point, after which Jaylen Brown's mother raised him and his sibling as a single parent.

His mother has had a great influence on his life, particularly when it came to education. According to Pro Football Network, the NFL star previously credited his mother for his academic pursuits. In an interview with 247 Sports, Brown talked about his mother's role and said:

"My mom always encouraged me to join a lot of extracurricular activities, keep me occupied, so maybe my mother’s the reason I was into a lot of that stuff, and a lot of that cultural capital I got from Wheeler High School, I give credit to my mother, because that’s where credit is due."

His mother, Mechalle Brown, who grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, is an accomplished educator in her own right. According to People Magazine, Mechalle, is a part time professor at Cambridge College in Boston. She studied at the Michigan State University, from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.

She later pursued a MBA from the American InterContinental University in Shaumburg, Illinois. In a February 2024 interview with Rolling Out Magazine, Mechalle Brown revealed what prompted her to focus on education for her two sons. She said:

"The basis of that is the foundation of family. My background, and my family’s background, is education. We often say education is our business, and with that being said, four generations of family members went on campuses with graduate degrees or post-graduate degrees. Jaylen didn’t have an option when it came to education. My mother, his mother, my grandparents, he was raised to know education makes a difference."

Apart from his mother, his maternal grandmother, who was also an educator, played an important influence in her grandson's life. In an interview with Andscape, Jaylen Brown's mother spoke about her mother and said:

"She treated people with kindness, no matter if it was the top person or someone who was not the top person. She always carried herself in that way. She made sure that Jaylen and Quenton had values, that they had character and integrity as young Black men and in how they carried themselves. She taught them how to use their voice. When Jaylen teared up, he knew that all the things he is, he could see that’s where it originated. She was the originator."

It was Mechalle's push that helped Jaylen Brown to later pursue a Master's level course at the UC Berkeley, while still in college at the University of California. His older brother, Quenton Brown, on the other hand, attended the University of Central Florida, from where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration and Management. He also studied at the University of North Texas. According to his Linkedln prolife, he currently works as an Athlete Relations Coordinator at PlayBooked.

According to People Magazine, apart from his mother's influence on his education, Mechalle Brown also inspired her son's role in activism, who had in 2020 driven over fifteen hours to take part in the peaceful protests after George Floyd's murder.

Jaylen Brown's father, Quenton Marselles Brown is a well renowned a boxer, with a record career record of twenty five knockouts. Quenton, who stands at seven feet, turned pro back in 1989 and went on to achieve several milestones in his career until his retirement. Years later, he reportedly came out of retirement, and in 2016 he won the World Boxing Union World Championship. In an interview with Boxing24.com, Quenton Brown explained his decision to come out of retirement, saying it was to inspire both of his sons. He said

"My main motivation for coming out of retirement was to show my kids that I never gave up on my dreams. So I didn’t want them to give up on theirs. I am extremely proud of both my sons. I am especially proud of Jaylen. He is an extraordinary athlete and very smart, he’s even planning to go to Harvard next year, so I am extremely proud of both my sons, really."

Jaylen Brown's father, who previously served as a member on the Hawaiian State Boxing Comission Board, had previously given Jaylen valuable advice of not getting an agent during his draft, back in 2016. He explained the reason for doing so, saying:

"When my son Jaylen went from college to the NBA, I told him, ‘Don’t even get an agent. ... Why do you want to get an agent and let them take [a percentage] of your money ... and you don't have a choice on what team you go to."

Jaylen Brown has not yet released a statement regarding the incident involving his father.
