Who is Josh Johnson? Everything to know about The Daily Show's new host

Josh Johnson is a writer who joined the writing team of The Daily Show in 2017, following his stint at NBC's Tonight Show. Johnson has been a Daily Show correspondent for about a year and a half.

On July 21, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Johnson will be joining a Tuesday-to-Thursday host rotation. This means he will anchor the Comedy Central late night show's from Tuesdays to Thursdays. This will be the first time Johnson will take on a host role.

He will anchor the show starting July 22. The scheduled guests on his show are Great Black Hope author Rob Franklin on Tuesday, singer Samara Cyn on Wednesday, and Happy Gilmore 2 actor Christopher McDonald on Thursday.

Josh Johnson's hosting gig comes three years after Trevor Noah left his desk. Since then, The Daily Show has undergone a format change, with a rotating set of hosts taking turns to anchor the show. The rotating hosts include, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic.

After news about his hosting debut was made public, Johnson took to his Instagram page to express gratitude saying,

"It's my first time hosting anything on TV. Ever. I've spent years writing behind the scenes, learning from truly great and talented people. Now, for three nights, I get to sit at the desk and do it myself."

Josh Johnson was born on March 16, 1990 in Louisiana. He received a degree in lighting design for theatre from Centenary College in 2012.

Joshn Johnson got his start writing for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2016. He has also appeared on Netflix's The Comedy Line-Up, and has voiced the character Harry Buns on Disney's Kiff.

Johnson is also a stand-up comedian and has two specials to his name: 2021's #(Hashtag), which premiered on Comedy Central and 2023's Up Here Killing Myself for Peacock. In 2018, he was named New York's Funniest Stand-Up at the New York Comedy Festival. In 2019, Johnson toured with Trevor Noah on the Loud & Clear tour.

Johnson is also a four-time Emmy nominee as part of The Daily Show's writing staff. His comedic story Catfishing the KKK has received more than 13 million views on YouTube.

Johnson enters the hosting circuit days after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was announced to be cancelled. Stephen Colbert's show shares parent company Paramount with The Daily Show.
