Before Kim Cattrall’s recent wedding to Russell Thomas, a small London affair with just a handful of people present, she had already walked through three marriages, each tied to a different moment in her rise as an actress.

Hollywood Life reported that her first attempt at marriage happened early. She was 21, newly stepping into the industry, when she married Canadian writer Larry Davis. The relationship didn’t survive long; they split two years after their 1977 wedding, and the marriage was eventually annulled.

Her second marriage brought a shift in scenery. She married German architect Andre J. Lyson in 1982 and moved to Frankfurt. For a while, the arrangement worked until her film career took her back to the United States for longer stretches of time. Work kept her moving, and the long-distance rhythm eventually wore the marriage down. They divorced in 1989 after seven years together.

A few years later, she got married again, this time to music engineer Mark Levinson. They tied the knot in 1998 and shared six years of marriage. However, that relationship, too, couldn't last, and the couple separated, finalizing the divorce in 2004. Years after those relationships ended, Cattrall found love again with Russell Thomas, whom she began dating in 2016. Their quiet wedding in London marked a new chapter, far removed from the early chaos of her Hollywood life.

As E! News noted, Kim Cattrall stepped into her wedding wearing a Dior suit, a sharp white blazer paired with a tulle midi skirt. Russell Thomas chose a custom black suit by Richard James, paired with a white shirt and a gold tie that played well against her outfit.

Their connection went back to 2016, when she visited the BBC studios for a Woman’s Hour appearance. Russell, working as an audio engineer at the time, reached out online soon after. “He direct messaged me,” Kim Cattrall told Glamour in 2018.

“It was very, very modern [and] it’s just been very easy.”

The messages turned into real-life time together, and Russell eventually flew to Vancouver to visit her.

“It was very brave of him because we didn’t really know each other than having a few meals together," she told People in 2020.
"But he came and we got along great. And we’ve been together ever since!”

They mostly kept their relationship quiet, but Kim Cattrall described their comfort with one another in simple, clear terms. She explained to People that

“I’m very comfortable around him, he’s a firecracker and he’s got a wicked sense of humor. And he’s easy on the eyes!"

A report from the Independent in October 2016 revealed that Kim Cattrall’s years on Sex and the City came with a personal cost. She explained that the demanding schedule behind her six-year run contributed to the end of her marriage to Mark Levinson.

“It [Sex and the City] cost me my marriage because I was never home, I was never there and my husband got lonely and upset and competitive and it was really difficult, it was really hard. You end up spending more time with my Sex and the City family than I did with my real family.” she told news.com.au.

Kim Cattrall didn't just share insights about her marriage. Her personal views had also become clearer in 2015 when she publicly challenged the stigma surrounding women who do not have children. During an appearance on Radio 4’s Women’s Hour, she said she considered herself a mother in her own way, noting her discomfort with labels such as “childless” or “child-free.”

“It’s the ‘less’ that is offensive – childless – it sounds like you’re ‘less’ because you haven’t had a child,” she shared.

She explained that she had young actors she mentored and nieces and nephews she remained close to, and questioned whether terms like “childless” truly described a woman’s role.

“There is a way to become a mother in this day and age that doesn’t include your name on the child’s birth certificate. You can express that maternal side very clearly, very strongly.”

Looking back at the path Kim Cattrall traveled, it’s clear her personal life rarely ran parallel to the glamour attached to her name. The work that brought her global recognition often demanded more than audiences ever saw, sometimes shaping her relationships in ways she later spoke about honestly rather than with regret. Her views on motherhood, her openness about the costs of fame, and the steady, private bond she developed with Russell Thomas painted a far fuller picture of the woman behind the roles.

Whether on screen or off, Kim Cattrall moved toward what felt authentic to her, and her most recent chapter suggested she found a balance she had once struggled to maintain.
