Macaulay Culkin just unwrapped a long-standing Home Alone secret, and it’s as surprising as the film’s booby traps. In a recent revelation, the actor looked back on his time filming the 1990 holiday classic and finally addressed a lingering rumor. Yes, he did have a stunt double, but it wasn’t just any stand-in. It was a 30-year-old man named Larry Nicholas, who Culkin admitted he once mistook for a teenager.
“My memory of Larry: He’s climbing the shelf, trying to reach the thing on top, and the whole shelf collapsed. It was vicious that first take,” Culkin shared.
“They do it again and there’s another take and just boom. And they do it again, and they do it again, and I’m going, ‘Please take it easy on Larry! He’s only 13 years old!’” he added.
According to E! News, Macaulay Culkin genuinely believed Nicholas was a young teen, not realizing his stunt double was actually well into adulthood. As reported by The Blast, Nicholas bore a striking resemblance to 9-year-old Macaulay Culkin, not just in height but also in build. This rare physical match helped the illusion hold up on screen.
IMDb lists Larry Nicholas among the seasoned stunt performers of the ’90s, with credits in films like Nowhere to Run, Waterworld, and Dante’s Peak. But for many fans, his most memorable role may forever remain the uncredited kid who wasn’t.
Macaulay Culkin looks back on Home Alone myths and childhood memories:
More than three decades after Home Alone hit theaters, Macaulay Culkin is revealing which parts of the film were improvised and which ones weren’t. In a recent interview on Hot Ones, Culkin responded to a long-running rumor about whether he improvised the memorable line:
“You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?”
“Not that one,” he said. “That was in the script.”
While that line was written, Culkin admitted that not everything he said on screen came from the page. He recalled that during Kevin’s trip to the grocery store, he added his own flair to the scene.
“When I was at the grocery store, it’s like, ‘Where are your parents?’ ‘Why won’t you tell me?’ And I said, ‘Because you’re a stranger,’” he explained.
“That one was mine. I did a lot of that kind of stuff.” he added
Now 44 and a father of two, Culkin also confirmed other behind-the-scenes tidbits, like the photo of Buzz’s girlfriend, which many fans assumed showed a young girl. In reality, it was a boy made up to look like one.
“As far as I know, yes, I mean, you’d have to ask Chris, but that’s what I was told. Apparently, that was the gag.” Culkin shared.
The unusual choice came from director Chris Columbus, who didn’t want a real girl mocked on screen.
Even props were adjusted for Culkin’s age. In one scene, Kevin flips through a Playboy magazine, only to quickly toss it aside. Culkin revealed the magazine was modified for the moment.
“Because I was 9 years old, they pretty much glued all the rest of those pages together,” he shared.
