Laura Dahlmeier, who was previously in a relationship with Austrian climber Robert Grasegger, who died in a mountaineering accident in 2022, is now reported to have died after a climbing incident. According to People Magazine, the two-time Winter Olympics champion was struck by a falling rock on July 28 while climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan.

According to The Guardian, the accident occurred at an altitude of nearly 7,000 meters around noon in a remote part of the mountains. A statement released by her representative stated that being hit by the rocks likely caused her instant death. It also added that the rescue operation launched to find her had to be called off due to bad weather conditions. It read:

"Laura Dahlmeier died on 28 July in a mountain accident on Laila Peak (6,069 metres) in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. A recovery operation was launched but ultimately called off on the evening of 29 July. It was Laura Dahlmeier’s express and written will that in a case like this, no one should risk their life to recover her. It was her wish to leave her body behind on the mountain in this case. This is also in line with the wishes of her relatives.”

More about Laura Dahlmeier's ex-boyfriend, Robert Grasegger's accident, as the German biathlete passes away

Laura Dahlmeier's death now shocks the mountaineering world. In January 2022, she experienced a personal loss when her former boyfriend, Robert Grasegger, died in a climbing accident after an avalanche occurred while he was climbing in the Patagonia region. Reports state that Grasegger, who was only twenty-nine years old at the time, was working as a mountain guide and was climbing with two others, including his then-girlfriend, Ana Truntschnig.

According to Deutsche Welle, the group of three was traveling through Aguja Guillaumet in the Fitz Roy range, which is part of the Patagonian Andes, a mountain range known for its challenging climbs. The other two members of the group were able to escape with grievous injuries.

Laura Dahlmeier, born on August 22, 1993, was a talented climber who went on to win a record five gold medals at the 2017 World Championship held in Hochfilzen, Austria. She had won several prestigious titles throughout her career until her retirement in 2019 at the age of twenty-five. The International Biathlon Union released a statement in light of her death, saying:

"Laura was one of the greatest athletes to grace biathlon and her loss is felt deeply by everyone in biathlon, the wider German sport family and beyond. The IBU’s thoughts are with Laura’s family and friends during this very difficult time."

Laura Dahlmeier, who was just thirty-one years old, is survived by her parents, Susi and Andreas Dahlmeier.
