Lawrence Moten's wife, Noelene Moten, is a Syracuse University graduate from 1994 and also met Lawrence in college. Noelene reportedly worked as a school counselor for Prince George's County Public Schools, as per a profile of Lawrencia Moten, their elder daughter.

Lawrence was found dead at his Washington D.C home on September 30 at the age of 53 as per multiple reports.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, in a statement issued by the school, said,

"This is a tragic day for the Syracuse basketball family. Lawrence's passing is such a sudden thing - it's very hard to take. He was one of the most underrated college basketball players of all time. I believe some people took his ability for granted because he made it look so easy. Lawrence was one of our greatest players and one of the best in the history of the Big East conference."

Current Orange Head coach Adrian Autry, and Lawrence's former teammate, said,

"It's a sad day for the Orange community. For me, Lawrence was not only a teammate, but a friend. I can't think of anybody that was more positive or who loved Syracuse more than he did. Obviously, his basketball - he was one of the greatest to be put the uniform. It's a big loss."

Lawrence Moten was married to Noelene Moten, whom he first met in college. The couple had two daughters, Lawrencia and Leilani. Lawrencia is a sports anchor and TV host who currently works with HBCU Go, which is an Atlanta, Georgia-based TV service. Lawrencia also works as a sideline reporter for Liberty University's women's basketball team.

In Lawrencia's profile by NBC Coast TV, she revealed that her younger sister, Leilani Moten, worked at JP Morgan & Chase.

Lawrence Moten began his basketball career in 1991. In 1994, he graduated from Syracuse and became the Orange's all-time leading scorer. Lawrence completed his NCAA career with 2,334 points, averaging 19.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists during his four-season career at Syracuse.

Moten was drafted by The Vancouver Grizzlies as the 36th overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft. He played two seasons with the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1995 to 1997 before ending his NBA career with the Washington Wizards in 1997-98.

Most recently, Moten was working at Clary Middle School in 2019 and in June 2025, he returned as the general manager for the boys' and girls' basketball teams at Digital Pioneers Academy.
