During a conversation with People Magazine at the opening night of Jordan E. Cooper’s Oh Happy Day! on Wednesday, Oct. 15, Luis A. Miranda Jr. looked back on a date that helped shape his life story.

He revealed that he and his wife, Luz, had gone on one of their very first outings together in 1975, to see a play at The Public Theater in New York City. Coincidentally, The Public became the same stage where Hamilton premiered off-Broadway in February 2015, before moving that August to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Luis told People Magazine that decades later, the couple still made time for theater nights at The Public, the same venue that now holds the Oh Happy Day! opening.

“We come all the time,” he said, noting that Luz missed this particular event because of a prior commitment.

“Otherwise, she'd be here. Every time we start a new production at the Public, it's one more triumph for people to be able to see theater,” he added.

When Hamilton opened a decade ago, the Miranda family could hardly have imagined the phenomenon it would become, earning 11 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Yet for Luis, Lin-Manuel's success never came as a surprise.

Back in 2020, he told People Magazine about the moment he first recognized Lin-Manuel’s potential.

“He was at Hunter Elementary School, and they had been invited to sing - he was like 7, 8 years old - they had been invited to sing at one of those morning shows with the chorus of the school, and I remember seeing him when the camera was on him for a couple of seconds and telling my wife, ‘This kid is going to be a star. I really want him to be a lawyer, but he is going to be a star,’ ” he remembered

As Hamilton celebrated its tenth anniversary in September, Lin-Manuel's dad reflected with pride, telling the outlet that he expected the “greatness to continue,” especially with a live-captured version of the show now reaching theater audiences worldwide.
