Lorde, who recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, is the child of Sonja Yelich and Vic O'Connor. While Lorde has previously spoken about her parents and family, she generally maintains a very private life.

In her recent interview with Rolling Stone, published on 15 May, Lorde opened up a whole range of topics from her gender identity, to her mental health, and expectations that come with fame.

More about Lorde's parents

Lorde, or Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor as she was previously known, was born in 1996 to Sonja Yelich and Vic O'Connor. She is the second child out of four and grew up in Devonport alongside her family.

In a 2013 interview with Billboard, Lorde spoke about her parents not being from the entertainment industry was an advantage in helping her find something that was solely hers. She said:

"The fact that my parents weren’t really involved in music was kind of good, because it meant that I had something that was private and personal."

Lorde's mother, Sonja Yelich, is a poet, while her father, Vic O'Connor, is a civil engineer. In a 2013 conversation with Interview Magazine, Lorde shared how her parents helped keep her grounded, despite her experiencing fame at an early age. She said:

"My parents…know what young people need. My mum takes my iPhone off me at night, because I need to do homework and sleep, otherwise I'd spend all night on Facebook and Instagram...My parents are pretty good; they understand what I really want. If I do decide to leave school at the end of this year, that's a bridge we'll cross. I think I'm really lucky to have a great family."

In a 2015 interview with The Listener, the "Perfect Places" singer shared how she values her father's opinions, adding that she tries to listen to his voice when writing her songs. She said:

"I don't know what a good song sounds like. I don't know how it feels to be taken someplace in the words. I shut my eyes and hear his voice in the dark, singing the old songs over and over, ending each one with ohhh-yeah, because he's a first-verse-and-chorus kind of guy."

In June 2014, according to Entertainment Online, her parents, who had been together for more than thirty years, got engaged. The Royals singer announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), in a now-deleted tweet, saying:

"BEST DAY - went to niagara falls - my dad proposed to my mum after almost 30 years together."

Three years later, on 6 May 2017, the couple tied the knot in a private ceremony attended by their closest friends and family. Lorde and her three siblings were seen enjoying themselves with their parents.

Apart from her parents, Lorde maintains a close bond with her siblings. According to Hello Magazine, her eldest sister, Jerry Yelich-O'Connor, studied law at Auckland University. Her younger sibling, India Yelich-O'Connor, or Indy is also a musician and in 2023, released her new single, Hometown. Lorde's youngest sibling, Angelo Yelich-O'Connor, studied engineering at Auckland University and now does modelling work, having previously walked at New Zealand Fashion Week.

Lorde is set to release her fourth studio album, Virgin, in June, marking her return after a gap of four years since her last album, Solar Power, was released in 2021.
